The Public Interest Law Association at the University of Washington is a non-profit, student-run organization dedicated to promoting legal work that serves the public and improves the quality of life for individuals in our community and elsewhere. To this end, PILA raises awareness about the need for and rewards of pro bono and full-time public interest legal work, advocates for public interest training, and creates opportunities for law students and attorneys to combine their legal skills with passion and optimism in jobs that exemplify lawyers capacity to make a difference.   5. Volunteer Requirement: Before you can EVEN APPLY, you must have earned 5 volunteer house. This is a non-negotiable. What if you aren’t sure if you are going to apply to PILA… the best thing to do is to get the 5 hours so that you have the option open.
  6. Volunteer Requirement: So… how do you get the hours?1. Procuring Items for the auction. $100 worth of procured item = 1 hour2.   13. What about government work? What about the prosecutor’s office? The AG? The EPA?- To date, very few government applicants have been awarded a grant (but we have also received very few applicants for government internships)- If you apply, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining that the agency’s need for your position and its inability to pay you.Why?- The independent committee tends to believe that government work will sustain itself without assistance.

Independent Grant Committee:- Two UWLS students- Two UWLS professors- Two community practitionersThe PILA Board plays no role in the selection of grantees.The committee will rank your application based on set criteria. Beginning with the first-ranked proposal, funds will be distributed to all eligible applicants until no further PILA funding or eligible proposals are available. How are grantees chosen?
  16. Grantees must: - Work a minimum of 375 hours (full grant) or 175 hours (half grant) - Volunteer an additional 15 hours (full grant) or 10 hours (partial grant) for PILA during 2012-2013 academic year (+ volunteering at auction) - Write a 2-4 page report about your experiences - Work with PILA for promotional purposes relating to your experience What if I get a grant?
