  2. State Tree “Palo Verde was designated the official state tree of Arizona in 1954. "Palo Verde" is Spanish for "green stick." Blooming in the spring (beginning in late March and continuing until May), Palo Verde are beautiful trees found in the desert and the foothills of Arizona that add vibrant color to the desert. Palo Verde seeds were a food source for the Pima and Pap ago Indians of Arizona (the seeds were dried and ground in mortars to make a flour used for mush or cakes).”11 11

  3. State Seal “The official seal of Arizona displays the state's main enterprises and attractions. Arizona's state seal is in black and white and features a background mountain range with the sun rising behind the peaks, a storage reservoir (lake) and a dam, irrigated fields and orchards, grazing cattle, and a quartz mill with a miner holding a pick and shovel.”10 10

  4. State Reptile “The Arizona ridge-nosed rattlesnake (Crotalus willardi) was recognized as the official state reptile of Arizona in 1986. First known to science in 1905, this small brown snake is one of the most primitive rattlesnakes found in this country. This snake is a unique species which is an important and irreplaceable part of the North American natural heritage.”9. 9.

  5. State Fish “The critically endangered Apache trout was designated the state fish of Arizona in 1986. Found nowhere else in the world, Apache trout were nearing extinction caused by the introduction of non-native trout and early methods of livestock grazing, timber harvest and other land uses that impacted their habitat.”7 7.

  6. State Amphibian “The Arizona Tree Frog was designated the state amphibian of Arizona in 1986. Elected by the school children of Arizona during the "Arizona Wildlife Awareness" program in 1985 the Arizona tree frog won over the other three finalists: the red spotted toad, the Colorado River toad, and the spade foot toad.”8 8

  9. State Bird ”The state Bird is the Cactus Wren”6. “Cactus Wrens is seven to eight inches long and likes to build nests in the protection of thorny desert plants like the arms of the giant saguaro cactus, It builds many nests but lives in only one. The rest are decoys.”1. 6.
