  2. HE Curriculum Theme • Neil Challis, Mike Robinson, Mike Thomlinson (Sheffield Hallam University). • Objective 4: Increase the scope of the mathematics curriculum for HE nationally in order to allow real choices for a wide range of students.

  3. HE Curriculum Theme • Currently reviewing provision in target HEIs (Coventry, Leeds, Queen Mary - and Sheffield Hallam). • Looking at teaching, learning, assessment and support, particularly in first year. • Gathered factual data, and enriching by:

  4. HE Curriculum Theme • Large questionnaire to first year students during induction week. • Range of interviews - 33 so far – with: • key members of undergraduate programme teams, lecturers, and postgraduate tutors; • small groups of first year undergraduates.

  5. HE Curriculum Theme • We are carrying out the same measures in our own institution, but seeking outside help, as we must take care in treating and analysing our own students’ data.

  6. HE Curriculum Theme • Access provision - initial work on current position including: • access courses and numbers of mature students; • possibilities arising from Foundation degrees.

  7. HE Curriculum Theme • Further data gathering later, for instance on progression, and changes in student attitude after the first year. • Conclusions, recommendations, discussion and dissemination later.

  8. HE Curriculum Theme • National discussion. • Better self-knowledge. • Dissemination workshops. • Production of good practice guide. • Possible new provision including perhaps: • Dedicated programmes available for returning adult learners; • accessible provision available for all learners.
