  1. AGE - RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD) A guide to risks, symptoms and treatment Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

  2. 2 TYPES OF AMD

  3. RISK FACTORS You are more likely to develop AMD if you have one or more of the following.

  4. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS In its early stage, the following signs of macular degeneration can go unnoticed. 1. Gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly. 2. Shape of objects appear distorted and straight lines look wavy or crooked. 3. A dark area in central part of vision.

  5. Many people don’t realize they have AMD until their vision is very blurred. This is why it is important to have regular visits to an ophthalmologist to help detect any early signs of AMD before you have any vision problems. AMSLER GRID People with AMD may not be aware of how much sight they have lost as vision diminishes gradually. Use the Amsler grid to check your eyesight everyday to notice subtle vision changes. How to test your eyes?

  6. 1. In good light, look at the grid from about 30-40 cm away. Be sure to wear your reading glasses if you normally use them. 2. Cover one eye. Look directly at the dot in the center of the grid with your uncovered eye. 3. Notice if any of the lines look bent or wavy. See if any part of the grid looks blurry, dim, or out of shape. 4. Cover your other eye and test your vision the same way again. TREATMENT

  7. None of these are permanent cures, but they can help minimize vision loss.
