  1. Civil Rights Journal Entries

  2. TASK: • For our unit on Civil Rights, you will be required to complete four journal entries. These entries will be written on lined paper (with a heading), and they will be numbered and turned in together. • Each entry should consist of at least two paragraphs. Each paragraph must have three to four sentences. • Please WRITE NEATLY!!!!

  3. The Long Walk HomeJournal Entry #1 In the movie The Long Walk Home, Odessa is the housekeeper for the Thompson family. Odessa has to overcome obstacles to fight for what she believes in. In your entry: • Explain hardships Odessa or Miriam faced in the struggle for equality. • Have you ever had to overcome hardships in order to fight for something that you believe in? Explain.

  4. Journal Entry #2 • In 1947, Jackie Robinson crossed the color lines to become the first African American to play Major League baseball. He received several death threats and much hostility in order to pursue his dream. • Is it possible for one person to create change or make a difference? Explain, and give examples. • Under what circumstances might you risk your life to pursue your dream? (How far would you go to achieve your goal?)

  5. Journal Entry #3 • Have you ever been treated unfairly? Describe when and where, and how you felt about your experience. • What did you do in response to this unfair treatment? • Did this work to “fix the problem”? • What may have worked better?

  6. Journal Entry #4 Finish the following writing prompt in at least two paragraphs. I carried my tray, glancing around the lunchroom. I spotted an empty chair, but I hesitated. Should I join them? I would be the only…….
