  3. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

UNESCO World Heritage Committee Founded in 1972, World Heritage Convention in Paris 190 member countries have accepted the World Heritage Convention as of 2012 Canada joined the World Heritage Convention in 1976 UNESCO has designated 962 “World Heritage Sites” around the globe • 759 cultural world heritage sites • 193 natural sites • 29 mixed (cultural AND natural) sites • 44 are listed as “in danger” of being lost to the world

  5. UNESCO Mission Statement The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage: • the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity

  6. Criteria for World Heritage Sites (i)    represent a masterpiece of human creative genius; (ii)  to exhibit an important developments in architecture, technology, monuments or landscape design; (iii) a unique testimony to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared; (iv) an outstanding example of a type of building, technology or landscape which illustrates a significant stage in human history; (v)  an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, or human interaction with the environment

  7. Criteria for World Heritage Sites (vi)  associated with events or artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. (vii) contain unique natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty (viii) outstanding examples representing major stages of earth's history, including the record of life or significant geological processes (ix) outstanding examples representing on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of plants and animals; (x) to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for conservation of biological diversity, including those of outstanding universal value
