  2. The Exodus: Background • Background (Chap. 1) A. The house of Jacob grew exponentially! (v.1-7). 1. Started with about 70 people from Canaan. 2. the people were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied and grew exceedingly strong (v.7).

  3. The Exodus: Background B. The new Pharaoh did not trust the people of Israel (v.8-22). 1. He didn’t “know Joseph” nor did he have respect for his contribution to the Egyptians’ wellbeing (v.8). 2. He did recognize the potential threat to Egyptian safety presented by the Israelites.

  6. The Exodus: Background 3. Pharaoh oppressed the Israelites a) Set taskmasters to afflict them with huge burdens (e.g., building cities) (v.11-14). b) Instructed Hebrew midwives to murder Hebrew boys at birth (v.15- 17).

  7. The Exodus: Background c) Instructed all Egyptians to cast all Hebrew male children/infants into the Nile River (v.22). 4. Despite Pharaoh’s efforts, the Israelites multiplied (v.12, 20).

  8. The Exodus: Moses • Moses A. The Birth and Initial Rearing (Exod. 2:1-10) 1. Moses is born, lives with his family for a while and is eventually and placed in an “ark” on the Nile when he can no longer be hidden.

  10. The Exodus 2. Miriam, his sister follows the ark as it floats down the Nile. 3. Pharaoh’s daughter retrives it and gives it to Miriam to locate a Hebrew woman to nurse him—his mother. Q: how was God at work in this? Q: Can man’s plans and God’s hand come together? (see, Prov. 16:9)

  11. The Exodus B. Moses on the Run (Exod. 2:11-15). 1. Moses is living as a son of Pharaoh. --best education, food, training, etc. 2. He sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and kills him (Exod. 2:12). 3. The truth comes out about the murder and Moses flees for his life (v.15).

  12. The Exodus • The Call of Moses (Exodus 3) 1. God is moved by the cries of the people—He knows!(Exod. 2:23-25). 2. Moses is attending to Jethro’s sheep and sees a burning bush that is not consumed (Exod. 3:1-4). Q: Why wasn’t the bush consumed?

  13. The Exodus 3. God explains the situation and the reason for the call (v.7-10). 4. God calls Moses with these words: “Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." Exodus 3:10

  14. The Exodus Q: How would you have responded to the burning bush? Q: How would you have responded to the call?

  15. The Exodus D. Moses’ Excuses 1. I’m not worthy (Exod. 3:11-12). 2. I Don’t know Enough about God (Exod. 3:13-23). 3. The people will not believe me (Exod. 4:1-9). 4. I can’t speak in public(Exod. 4:10-12). 5. I don’t want to go! (Exod. 4:13). Any of this sound familiar?
