  2. Proctor takes a number of important steps which enable him to redeem himself for his past sins, even though they also lead to his death by hanging. Over the course of the play, he changes from a man who has lost his honesty and goodness into a man of great integrity and honour. His path to redemption means that he goes to his death with dignity and restored self-respect.

  3. Step 1 He rejects the advances of Abigail (Act One) Step 2 He decides to go to Court to save his wife from being executed (Act Two)

  4. Step 3 He refuses Danforth’s offer to save his wife if he drops the charges against Abigail (Act Three) Step 4 He publicly admits to having the affair with Abigail (Act Three)

  5. Step 5 During his confession, he refuses to accuse others of witchcraft (Act Four) Step 6 He rips up his confession to witchcraft (Act Four)
