  1. The 27Amendments Using non-linguistics to make learning the amendments relevant and memorable!

  2. Bill of Rights • The B.o.R. (basic rights) • Lists rights that ALL citizens get • All are rights that colonists didn’t get! • Wrote them to make sure that future generations will receive these rights • Protects our civil liberties (freedoms for everyone).

  3. Amendment 1: Freedom of RAPPS • Religion • Establishment Clause - Congress can’t establish a religion • Free Exercise Clause - Choose your own religion!! • Assembly (Peaceful) • Petition (Gain support for an idea) • Press • Slander - Spoken lies (can’t do) • Libel - Printed lies (can’t do) • Speech

First Amendment Text • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.[1]

  5. 1st Amendment- Religion • A high school football coach directs a player to lead his team in prayer before every game. One player complains to his parents who takes the complaint to the principal. • Legally, what will the principal do? • What do you think should be done in this situation?

  6. 1st Amendment- Religion • A 9-year old child is extremely sick and will die without medical treatment. This is a very treatable disease and the child would get better with treatment. The parents refuse to get treatment for the child saying it is against their religion. • Legally, are the parents allowed to do this? • Should the parents be forced to provide treatment for their child?

  7. 1st Amendment- Religion • A church receives money from a local city government in order to provide services for the homeless. They offer meals at the church three nights a week and along with the meals they pass out religious literature and have a prayer group going on during the meals. 1) Is this legal? 2) Should this be legal?

  8. Amendment 2 (II) • How many bare arms do you see? “WOW! I SEE 2 BARE ARMS!”

  12. Amendment 4 (IV) • Jay-Z • (jay-z has 4 letters) OR • 4 (JAY-Z) • 4 kind of like a house, can’t search house without a warrant

  13. Amendment 5 (V) • Due Process (Appropriate process taken in all legal procedures) • I plead the 5th! (don’t self incriminate…yourself?) • Double Jeopardy (can’t be tried twice for the same crime) • Grand Jury (enough evidence for trial?) • Eminent Domain (house) I “due” what I gotta “due” in my house, you don’t have to say a word so hush your mouth…it’s grand to know that peers will decide and you will only be in jeopardy once for that crime…

  14. Amendment 6 (V+I)= VI • 666 • Think bad people • Even “bad" people will get a right to a trial by jury (criminal cases only) • Even bad people will have the right to a lawyer • “Speedy Six”

  15. Amendment 7 (VII) • 7 rhymes with heaven • Not criminal cases but civil (non criminal) • You get a jury trial only if more than $20! • Oh thank heaven for 7!

  16. Amendment 8 (VIII) • Number 8 looks like a paddle • No cruel and unusual punishments! • No excessive bails and fines • Guess what looks like an 8 too: • $

  17. Amendment 9 (10 is X so…1 - X) IX • In case we forgot any… • 9 rhymes with “mine” • Rights given to the people…us!

  18. Amendment 10 (X) • Not for us, but for the states! • Reserve Clause- powers given to the states

  20. Amendment 12 (XII) • 1 2 • Voting for the #1 man and the #2 man! • voting for the Pres and Vice Pres

  21. Amendment 13 (XIII) • 13 is an unlucky number • Being a slave was not good  • Think slavery! • Abolished it! 

  22. Amendment 14 (XIV) • 1 (one) 4 (four) ALL! • We are all equal under the law! • **HUGE!!!! • Anytime one is not being treated equally…. Cite the 14th! • Connect to 5th too! (open your hand!)

  23. Amendment 15 (XV) • African American suffrage • Guess what? • African American has 15 letters! • 13, 14 and 15 go together!

  24. Amendment 16 (XVI) • What are people absolutely sick of doing? • PAYING TAXES!! • Amendment SICK-TEEN deals with taxes • Allows for the United States to collect income taxes from citizens

  25. Amendment 17 (XVII) • Now we get to elect senators! • “Senate-teen”

  26. Amendment 18 (XVIII) • What can you not do at age 18…buy alcohol! • With Amendment 18, neither could anyone else in the United States • The production, transport, and sale of alcohol was made illegal for thirteen years • 46 of 48 states voted in support of this Amendment (Connecticut, Rhode Island did not)

  27. Amendment 19 (XIX) • Gives women the right to vote! • Submitted to the states for ratification in 1919! • Moderately inappropriate remembering device

  28. Amendment 20 (XX) • Terms of President, VP and Congress • Shorter lame duck period • President gets inaugurated on Jan. 20!

  29. Amendment 21 (XXI) • What can you do at 21 years of age? • Exactly… • Prohibition is repealed!

  30. Amendment 22 (XXII) • Pres only gets twotwo! • Two terms!

  31. Amendment 23 (XXIII) • People in DC love 23! • Or, MJ’s number • He last played for the…

  32. Amendment 24 (XXIV) • No poll taxes! • 2vote4 free

  33. Amendment 25 (XXV) • What if the pres dies or leaves office? • Rhyme it: “25 president dies”

  34. Amendment 26(XXVI) • 18 year olds get suffrage! • 2 + 6 = 8teen year olds

  35. Amendment 27 (XXVII) • Rhyme it: • “Congress would be in heaven if it wasn’t for 27!” • No pay increases until next group of Representatives
