  2. 22 Presidential Tenure • Presidents serve 2 elected terms • Or 10 years if V.P. or successor takes over for a president and serves two years or less of the former president’s term, then the successor may serve an additional 2 terms. If more than two years, only 1 term can be served Noted: Prior to Amendment 22, Presidents can serve unlimited terms. George Washington begins custom of serving 2 terms. FDR breaks the custom

  3. 23 Presidential Electors for D.C. • Treats District of Columbia as a State for purposes of Electoral College. Meaning that D.C. citizens can vote in presidential elections. • BUT, D.C. is granted the number of electors it would have if it were a state (3) – but no more than the most populous state Noted: D.C. has no representation in Congress (they have 1 non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives)

  4. 24 Right to Vote in Federal Elections – Tax Payments • Outlawed the payment of any tax as a condition for voting (poll tax)

  5. 25 Succession, V.P. Vacancy, Inability Succession: • If a President is forced from office (dies or resigns) the V.P. becomes President. Vice Presidential Vacancy • If the V.P. leaves office, the President is allowed to select a new V.P. His selection must be approved (confirmed) by a majority vote of both the House and Senate. Inability • If President falls ill, or must temporarily step down, he gives notice to leadership in House and Senate and the V.P. steps in as Acting President. If Prez comes back, he must provide notice to House and Senate leadership.

  6. 26 Right to Vote 18 Years Old • Suffrage to all citizens 18 years or older • Noted: Oregon v. Mitchell affirmed the federal government's power to set a minimum voting age for federal elections. However, no case has tested whether the federal government possesses the power to prevent states from lowering their voting ages to below 18 for federal elections since the federal government has not tried to prohibit states from doing so.

  7. 27 Congressional Pay • Limits congresses power to set own salaries • Noted: Specifically, the 27th prevents Congress from granting themselves pay raises during the current session. Rather any raises adopted, must take affect during the next session of Congress.
