  2. Welcome • Computer Skills and Applications is designed to provide hands-on instruction in basic keyboarding skills, computer concepts and software applications. The software applications include word processing, desktop publishing, presentation software, spreadsheets, and databases. Communication skills and basic mathematical concepts are reinforced in this course.

  3. Who Am I? • I am a native of Oxford, NC. • I graduated from JF Webb High School. • I went to NC A&T State University in Greensboro. • I have a Masters Degree in Business Education. • I am married with twin boys.

  4. Course Content • Computer Skills and Applications (6th & 7th) • Keyboarding Module 1-Alpha Keys • Keyboarding Module 2-Number/Symbol and Numeric Keypad • Keyboarding Module 3-Building Speed and Accuracy • Word Processing Basics and Business Correspondence • Word Processing Advanced Business Documents • Desktop Publishing Basics

  5. Course Content • Computer Skills and Applications Plus (7th & 8th) • Modules above at an accelerated pace PLUS • Presentation Basics • Presentation Techniques • Spreadsheet Basics and Formulas • Spreadsheet Charts and Advanced Features • Database Basics • Digital Literacy

  6. Expectations • Students need to be in their assigned seat working quietly on the posted assignment once the bell rings. BE on time! • BE PREPARED- with all materials and equipment • HAVE RESPECT- at all times to the instructor, your classmates, and YOURSELF • DO YOUR BEST- ask questions, participate in class, and make a difference • Adhere to the Granville County Schools Acceptable Use Policy when using the technology. • Not eat or drink in class • Take care of your personal needs such as bathroom, water, grooming, etc. prior to coming to class. • Keep all personal electronics such as cell phones, mp3 players, etc. off and out of sight. • Stay engaged in class activities. There should be no sleeping at desk

  7. Offenses and Consequences: (See Student Handbook) • Offense • Level 1 – tardiness, dress code violation, etc. • Level 2 – blatant disrespect, class disruption, bullying, etc. • Level 3 – fighting, assault, gang activity, etc. • Level 4 – injury to school property, etc. • Level 5 – dangerous instruments, etc. • Consequence • Documented Verbal Warning/Parent Contact • Conference with Administrator • Center for Innovative Learning • Suspension • Long term suspension

  8. Classroom Procedures • A procedure is the way we do things. • It is not a rule, so you will not be punished or rewarded for doing it. It’s just how we make this classroom run! • To make things work we must follow procedures. For example: • To open your locker, you have to select your combination as directed by the lock manufacturer. • To cook a delicious meal, you need to follow the steps in the recipe. • To place a call on your phone, you need to dial the number in the right order. • The Classroom is no different. To learn, we must have procedures!

  9. Entrance • Please Enter QUIETLY • Sit in your assigned seat • Take out materials • Review daily agenda • Begin assigned work!

  10. Getting Your Attention • There will be times when you will be working in groups or individually and I will need the attention of the class. • I will: • Raise my Hand in the air • You will: • Get quiet • Face me • Wait for instructions

  11. Instructional Time • Please raise your hand when you have a question and response. • Do not talk while anyone else is talking • Please do not interrupt with unrelated questions • Follow Instructions completely before beginning your task

  12. Turning In Assignments • Sometimes I may ask you to turn in your papers to the correct tray. Please make sure you place your paper in the metal tray that is for your class! Do so in an orderly fashion (Do not just throw your papers in the tray!)

  13. Heading on Assignments • Heading should be as follows for all assignment (paper and electronically)

  14. Finishing Classwork Early • You may quietly read a book. DO NOT use Macs unless given permission • You may work on otherassignments FOR THIS COURSE or make-up work • You may NOT talk or be out of your seat.

  17. Absences • It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed while you were out. • Check the black tray and my website for anything you may need to make up.

  18. End of Class • The teacher dismisses you, NOT the bell! • Please do not start packing up your things until you are dismissed • You may leave when the teacher says, “Have a wonderful day!” • Please make sure your desk and the area around are free of any trash and that you throw it away on your way out.

  19. Moving Around the Room • When teacher/student is instructing or talking/performing, or during a discussion: • Do not get up and move around the room. • Do not ask to get out of your seat during discussions unless it is an emergency. • If you need to be out of your seat ask permission by raising your hand and pointing to what you need (i.e. pencil sharpener, tissue) • Immediately return to seat after finishing your business.
