Since 1968, the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) has advocated for affordable housing and homelessness solutions in Canada. In June 2011, members recognized the crucial role of Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in addressing these issues. A resolution was passed to collaborate on solutions and advocacy. A 2013 webinar featured case studies from BIAs in Vancouver and Winnipeg, highlighting their experiences. With over 15 BIAs and 30 municipal officials participating, discussions focused on the intersection of local businesses and community homelessness challenges.

CHRA Congress, Regina, June 2011 CHRA members unanimously passed a resolution which acknowledged the important role of BIAs in housing and homelessness. The resolution called on CHRA to work with BIAs from across the country on housing and homelessness solutions and advocacy. CHRA Webinar, February 20, 2013 “Case studies” from two BIAs presented: Charles Gauthier, Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association Stefano Grande, Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone 15 representatives from BIAs across the country participated, as did over 30 municipal officials and practitioners from non-profit housing and social service organizations. Participants wanted to learn about how to work with BIAs within their community on homelessness and affordable housing issues.
