  1. LTL-X RETROMETER OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

  2. THE LTL-X RETROMETER

  3. DISPLAY SCREEN

  4. DISPLAY SCREEN SCHEMATIC

  5. GETTING STARTED • BATTERY • Make sure battery (12v/1.3Ah NiMH) is fully charged using the external charger powersupply (100-240 VAC/12VDC). • Battery and fuses available through Flint Trading Co. (336) 475-6600. PLUG INTO WALL OUTLET PLUG INTO LTL-X

  6. Battery charger power supply(PLUGGED INTO MAINS AND LTL-X) • Display will show a moving text that explains the charging state. • ex.) Charging/Charging done • Battery icon in the upper right corner of the display screen will also indicate the charging state. Charger in outlet Charger in LTL-X

  8. CALIBRATION • CALIBRATE EACH DAY BEFORE USE • Instrument is supplied with two (2) calibration units, a reference calibration unit (black), and a field calibration unit (red). FIELD UNIT REFERENCE UNIT

  9. CALIBRATION • The black reference calibration unit is factory calibrated and traceable to PTB (Physikalsich-Technishe Bundesanstalt). This unit is used to perform the zero calibration and the reference calibration on the LTL-X. • The field calibration unit is used to perform calibrations in the field when measurements are questionable. This unit is calibrated against the black reference unit.

  10. ZERO CALIBRATION • Mount the reference calibration unit underneath the front end of the instrument with the white ceramicend of the unit facing out away from the instrument tower.

  11. ZERO CALIBRATION • Make sure the pins on the sides of the calibration unit fit into the slots in the LTL-X.

  12. ZERO CALIBRATION • Press the ON button. • Press the CALIBRATION button to start the zero calibration. Follow the instructions on the screen. ON BUTTON CALIBRATE BUTTON

  13. ZERO CALIBRATION • At the end of the zero calibration use the UP and DOWN buttons to adjust the number on thescreento match the number on the label of the reference unit.

  14. ZERO CALIBRATION The number 147 on the label of the reference unit.

  15. REFERENCE CALIBRATION • After the zero calibration the instrument is ready for the reference calibration. • The display will tell you to turn the calibration unit so that the ceramic (white) side faces the instrument tower. White ceramic plate

  16. REFERENCE CALIBRATION • Press the OK button to start the reference calibration.

  17. REFERENCE CALIBRATION • The end of the reference calibration is announced on the display screen. • Press the HOME button to return to the measurement display. End of the reference calibration noted on the screen.

  18. FIELD REFERENCE UNIT • When calibration is necessary during on site measurements, use the field calibration unit (red). • To use the field calibration unit, an R1 value must be obtained that links the field unit to the reference calibration unit. The reference unit is linked to a traceable standard. • To get the R1 value for the label of the field calibration unit; • 1.) Perform a reference calibration on the LTL-X using the reference (black ) calibration unit. • 2.) Replace the reference unit with the field calibration unit and take a measurement to obtain an R1 value reading. • 3.) Label the field calibration unit with the R1 value and date.

  19. TAKING A MEASUREMENT(There will be a demonstration given) • Select a level area of the pavement marking to be measured. • Make sure the area is free of debris. • Place the LTL-X on the road marking. • Press the OK button. The R1 value will be displayed in approximately 1 second. R1 VALUE

  20. TAKING A MEASUREMENT(A few things to remember) • Do not put pressure on the handle as this will effect the measurement geometry. • Be sure there are no obstructions in front of the instrument for at least 40 inches. • Choose an area free from reflective materials like raised pavement markers. Be sure there is no reflective clothing within 40 inches from the front of the LTL-X.

  21. AVERAGING MEASUREMENTS • For accurate readings, do not take just one reading of a road marking. • Take four readings in adjacent areas of the marking. • Let the instrument calculate the average of the readings. • Use the averaging function to obtain the average R1 value of four (4) calculated measurements. (4 is the default value)

  22. AVERAGING FUNCTION OF THE LTL-X • Press the MENU button on the display. Using the UP and DOWN buttons highlight AVERAGE. MENU BUTTON UP BUTTON DOWN BUTTON

  23. AVERAGING • Press the OK buttonto toggle between AVERAGE ON and AVERAGE OFF. To select, leave the highlight on the AVERAGE ON option. • Highlight the TYPE line. Press the OK button to toggle between MOVING or FIXED. Select MOVING. • To adjust the number of readings to average, highlight the NUMBER line and press OK. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to change the value. Set the number to four (4). • Press the HOME button to return to the measurement screen.

  24. PRINTING RESULTS • Press the MENU button. • Use the UP and DOWN buttons to highlight the Print/output Int line. This option enables the instrument to use the built-in printer. • Press the HOME button to return to the measurement screen. • Use the PRINT/OUT button on the display to print a measurement.

  25. PRINTING RESULTS PRINT/OUT BUTTON

  26. Replacing the printer paper • Use thermal paper roll 57.5mm(2.26 in) wide, diameter: max 31mm (1.22in). Available through Flint Trading Co. (336) 475-6600 • To open the paper roll compartment, pull the little lever out. • Insert the new roll letting a short paper tail out at the top. • Close the cover with some of the paper sticking out. LEVER

  27. MAINTENANCE • GENERAL CARE • Avoid shock and vibration to the instrument. • Keep the instrument clean. • Do not use in heavy rain. • The protection window underneath the instrument is coated with a highly efficient anti-reflective coating. Use a fine brush or compressed air to remove dust and loose particles.

  28. MAINTENANCE • BATTERY • LtL-X uses a 12v/1.3Ah NiMH battery. • Keep battery fully charged. Fully charge battery when storing the instrument for long periods of time. • When disconnecting the instrument from the charger, disconnect the charger from the instrument first and then from the wall outlet.

  29. MAINTENANCE • REPLACING THE BATTERY • The battery is located at the lower rear of the tower. BATTERY COVER

  30. MAINTENANCE • Loosen the screws at the battery cover. • Lift out the battery. • Press the snap-on clip on the connector and withdraw it from the circuit board. • Replace battery. SCREWS

  31. MAINTENANCE • FUSES • Two fuses are located in the battery compartment. • To change a fuse you need to access the battery compartment. • Carefully unscrew the plastic cap fuse holder with e.g. a coin. • Replace the fuse (T3.15A) with a new one and reassemble. Fuses available through Flint Trading Co. (336) 475-6600.

  32. RSC2 Software for the LTL-X RetrometerRoad Sensor Control Software • RSC2provides the following features to aid in the organization of data; • 1. Setting up user profiles • 2. Project planning • 3. Log management • Installation • Use cable provided to connect the LTL-X to a computer. • Insert the RSC2 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. • Run Set-up.EXE from the CD-ROM. • Follow on screen instructions.
