Session 4 – The Jewish Messiah Pt.2 In this session we will continue looking at the topic of the Jewish Messiah We will look at the overwhelming Old Testament (and New Testament) evidence that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, and that Jews alive today are waiting on a Messiah that already came Our source for tonight?   2. What is the Jewish perspective on Jesus? “There were dozens of people who walked through the Holy Land claiming to be the Messiah, curing the sick, exorcising demons, challenging Rome, gathering followers. In a way, there's nothing unique about what Jesus did. In fact, many of these so-called false Messiahs we know by name.” - Reza Aslan Why is Jesus different from all others?

  3. John 4:25-26: “The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” There is no denying that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah of Israel, the question is, was he telling the truth? Was he deceived? Or was he actually the Messiah as he claimed

The case for Jesus being the Messiah The obvious evidence is prophecy When dealing with prophecy, you must keep in mind that a modern day Jew does not believe the New Testament is reliable You have to establish the New Testament as being historically trustworthy, which is not something we have time to cover in great detail right now

  5. Key points to remember: The New Testament is the best attested book of antiquity While the OT is greatly supported in history, the New Testament far out does the Old Testament (which they accept as being identical to the original) in manuscript evidence and historical attestation And it obviously outdoes the “Oral Tradition”

  6. Nothing in the New Testament has been shown to be historically false Countless facts in the New Testament have been verified through archeology and other ancient writings at the time Facts in the New Testament are even verified by the Jewish Talmud, although the Talmud seems confused on some points (like when Jesus actually existed)

  7. That being said… Prophecy If you can show that Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies that Christians claim he fulfilled, the debate should really be over Especially when you realize that only Jesus could fulfill certain prophecies of the Old Testament, and that if he isn’t the Messiah, Judaism and the OT is a lie Let’s look at some prophecies

  8. “But as for you Bethlehem, Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from You one will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from everlasting.” (Micah 5:1 in the Hebrew Scriptures; in most English translations it is Micah 5:2) This passage, written around 700 B.C., has been recognized as being prophetic and Messianic in nature

  9. What does the New Testament say? “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David…

  10. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:1-7) If you think about it, Jesus (as a human) had no control over this one

  11. Others then say Mary and Joseph arranged to have the baby born there to fulfill the prophecy, but that doesn’t make sense in the context of what we know from history. They were from Nazareth, and didn’t decide when the census would be taken (Caesar did) Some sources say that a petition from the Jewish people to Caesar ended up postponing the Census until Mary happened to be full term with Jesus

  12. Prophecy from Psalms of Jesus’ Death Psalm 22:12-18: “Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strongbulls of Bashan have encircled Me.They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.For dogs have surrounded Me;

  13. The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” David is writing around 1000 B.C. Britannica reports that the first historical record of Crucifixion was about 519 BC when "Darius I, king of Persia, crucified 3,000 political opponents in Babylon"

  14. From the Tribe of Judah Genesis 49:10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.” Jesus was from the line of Judah as seen last week in the genealogy of Christ

  15. He (the Messiah) would be accused of a Capitol crime and make no defense Isaiah 53:7 “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” We already showed that Isaiah 53 is speaking of the Messiah, and the New Testament records Jesus fulfilling this

  16. Messiah would present himself by riding on a donkey Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. We will come back to this passage in a moment, this turns out to also fulfill another prophecy of the Old Testament

  17. The Messiah will die among the wicked, and be buried with the rich Isaiah 53:9 “And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.” Jesus died among the two thieves on the cross, but was buried by a rich man named Joseph of Arimathaea

  18. There are many prophecies about the coming Messiah in the OT He was to be of David’s family (2 Sam 7:12-16, Psalms 89:3-4, Psalms 132:11, Isaiah 9:6-7) He would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) He would sojourn in Egypt (Hosea 11:1) To be announced by an Elijah-like herald (Isaiah 40:3-5, Malachi 3:1, 4:5)

  19. He would be betrayed by a friend for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:1-13, Psalm 41:9) He would be disbelieved and rejected by religious rulers (Psalms 69:4, 118:22, Isaiah 6:10, 29:13, 53:1) Not a bone would be broken in his body (Exodus 12:46, Numbers 9:12, Psalm 34:20) He would teach through parables (Isaiah 6:9-10, Psalms 78:2)

  20. His birth would result in the massacre of Bethlehem’s children Matthew 2:16-18: “Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying…

  21. …A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more.” Matthew gives us an interpretation of two verses in the Old Testament Gen 35:19-20: “So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is Bethlehem).And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

  22. Jeremiah 31:15: “Thus says the Lord: “A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentationand bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.” How many people have caused the slaughter of Bethlehem’s children in history? If indeed this prophecy of Jeremiah is talking about the Messiah and the slaughter of Bethlehem's children, Jesus is the only fit

  23. But we haven’t even looked at the most specific prophecies in the Old Testament that show Jesus was the Messiah Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the Lord of hosts.” How is this evidence?

Most scholars agree that this is referring to the second temple, along with Daniel 9, there is ample support that the Messiah had to come before the destruction of the second temple The second temple has been gone for quite some time now, being destroyed in 70 A.D. How can the coming Messiah go to a temple that isn’t there? If the Messiah hasn’t come, it can’t happen anymore

  25. But another prophecy seems to get even more specific about the timing Daniel 9:21-27: “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment…

  26. to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined…

  27. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” As clearly as Daniel could have stated it, he taught that 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem had been issued, Messiah would be here on earth.

  28. The obvious conclusion is this: If Messiah was not on earth 483 years after a decree was issued to rebuild Jerusalem, then Daniel was a false prophet and his book has no business being in the Hebrew Scriptures. But if Daniel was correct and his prophecy was fulfilled, then who was the Messiah of whom he spoke? Jesus fulfilled this prophecy in a verse that we looked at earlier

  29. The commandment to restore and build Jerusalem was given by Artaxerxes Longimanus on March 14, 445 B.C. When did Jesus present himself as King? Only one time did he do that, when he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey • When we examine the period between March 14, 445 B.C. and April 6, 32 A.D., and correct for leap years, we discover that it is 173,880 days exactly, to the very day!

  30. Even if it’s a little off (by up to a year even) who else could possibly fit this criteria and be the Messiah? Who presented themselves as King to the Jews between 31-33 A.D. like Jesus did and like this prophecy requires? You’ll notice that Jew’s tend to reinterpret things in the Old Testament, and will ignore much of the literal meaning of the text in order to avoid the conclusion that Jesus fulfilled these prophecies

  31. If Jesus isn’t the Messiah, and is a false prophet in the eyes of the Jews, why did he accurately prophesy the future? 1. He Would Die In Jerusalem Matthew 16:21: “From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”

  32. Now keep in mind, they tried to kill Jesus several times in the New Testament outside of Jerusalem during his ministry 2. He prophesied how and when he’d die Matthew 26:2: “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” He had no control over what the Romans would do (and especially not over the time)

  33. 3. The Destruction Of The City Of Jerusalem Within One Generation Luke 21:32 “Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled… 5 Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, 6 “These things which you see—the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

  34. The New Testament was written down before 70 A.D. (atleast three of the four gospels, including the ones we are referencing here) so they couldn’t have written this prophecy after the fact Jesus prophesied that within one generation, the city of Jerusalem would be destroyed and the temple would also be destroyed, Jesus made this prophecy around 32 A.D. and it was fulfilled 38 years later in 70 A.D.

  35. 4. The People Would Be Scattered Luke 21:24: “And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” This is exactly what happened to the Jewish people have the destruction of Jerusalem, they were scattered around the world, until recently they’ve started to go home

  36. Moses gave us a criteria to judge a prophet by that the Jews would have to agree with Deuteronomy 18:20-22: “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’—when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord…

  37. the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.” If Jesus is accurately predicting the future and has prophetic power, doesn’t that mean he is from God and what he says true? But we haven’t even touched the most impactful prophecy that Jesus made

  38. 5. His Resurrection John 2:18-22: “So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body.”

  39. Even the Pharisees remember him saying this Matthew 27:62-63: “On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.” If Jesus rose from the dead, that would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is who he claimed to be

  40. As with the reliability of the New Testament, we don’t have time to go into all the details of this debate But there is ample evidence inside the New Testament and much of it verified outside the New Testament from non Christian sources (including the Talmud) that show that Jesus rose from the dead

  41. 1. Jesus died by crucifixion 2. Jesus Burial Story is trustworthy 3. The empty tomb 4. Grave clothes left 5. Broken Roman Seal 6. Roman Guards go Awol 7. Large Stone Removed

  42. 8. The Disciples Sincerely Believed He Rose from the Dead and Appeared to Them 9. The Conversion of the Skeptic James 10. OVER 500 WITNESSES 11. The conversion of Paul 12. Jesus' tomb wasn’t venerated as a shrine 13. No signs of legendary development

  43. Jesus rising from the dead is the only reasonable explanation for all this And Jesus already proved to be a accurate prophet, so why wouldn’t we believe he rose from the dead like he said he did? Jews are forced into accepting the same unrealistic explanations that Muslims and Atheists have to hold to in order to explain these things

  44. When you look at the Old Testament, there has been much confusion raised by Jews today about the Messiah, will there be one Messiah or two? Will he come on the clouds or on a donkey? Etc. Christianity explains those things, and shows how all the passages in the Old Testament will be fulfilled by Jesus Christ, a list of them at his first coming, and a list of them at his second coming

  45. Memory Verse Isaiah 53:9 “And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.”
