  4. The Reaction Around the World • For many nations around the world the assassination of the Archduke and his wife seemed distant (no effect on their lives) • For Europe, the reaction was quite different • The assassination became an excuse for war

Europe Reacts • The assassination set off a chain of events • Austria-Hungary was greatly angered and wanted to crush Serbian Nationalism • They hold Serbia responsible for the death of the Archduke • Germany offers Austria-Hungary a “blank cheque” (They will stand beside Austria-Hungary not matter what the outcome) Emperor Franz Joseph

The Ultimatum • An ultimatum is a demand to meet certain terms or face consequences • Austria-Hungary demanded that Serbia: • 1) Put down all nationalist hatred against Austria-Hungary • 2) Punish all of those involved with the assassination • 3) Allow Austro-Hungarian officials into Serbia to help apprehend the “Black Hand”

  8. Serbia’s Response • They agree to all but one of the demands • They will not allow Austro-Hungarian officials into their country • It is considered embarrassing for an independent nation to allow foreign law enforcers into their country

Declaration of War • Vienna28 July 1914 • “The Royal Serbian Government not having answered in a satisfactory manner the note of July 23, 1914, presented by the Austro-Hungarian Minister at Belgrade, the Imperial and Royal Government are themselves compelled to see to the safeguarding of their rights and interests, and, with this object, to have recourse to force of arms. Austria-Hungary consequently considers herself henceforward in state of war with Serbia.”
