Hybrid Animals Zebra and a horse: Zorse
Donkey and a zebra: “Zeedonk” • Hybrid animals are very interesting to look at, but some scientists think cross-breeding species is a bad idea. Not all of these animals survive to adulthood, and they are at risk for being born with genetic defects. In addition, crossbreeding is simply unnatural—it typically does not occur in the wild, only in captivity.
Grolar Bear • A Grolar Bear is a hybrid animal between a polar bear and a grizzly bear.
*How do Hybrid’s Reproduce?* • In general, a hybrid is any offspring resulting from the mating of two distinctly homozygous individuals. • A genetic hybrid carries two different alleles of the same gene.
A Wolphin is a hybrid between a bottle-nose dolphin and a false killer whale. • There are only two Wolphins that exist and can be seen at Sea Life Park, in Hawaii. Wolphin
*Hybrids* • Hybrids between different subspecies within a species (such as between the Bengal tiger and a Siberian tiger) are known as intra-specific hybrids. • Hybrids between different species within a genus (such as between lions and tigers) are sometimes known as inter-specific hybrids or crosses. • Hybrids between different genera (such as between sheep and goats) are known as inter-generic hybrids. • Extremely rare interfamilial hybrids have been known to occur (such as the guinea fowl hybrids). No inter-ordinal (between different orders) animal hybrids are known.
Liger • A liger is a hybrid between a male lion and a tigress.
*Different Types of Hybrids* • Single cross hybrid – first generation of offspring resulting from a cross between pure bred parents. • Double cross hybrid - offspring resulting from a cross between two hybrids of single cross. • Three-way cross hybrid – offspring from a cross between a single cross hybrid and an inbred line. • Triple cross hybrid - offspring resulting from the crossing of two different three-way cross hybrids. • Population hybrid – offspring resulting from the crossing of plants or animals in a population with another population. For instance, a cross between difference race.
Cama • A hybrid between a male camel and a female llama. It has the strength of a camel, but with no hump and the fleece of a llama; and can survive without water for long periods of time, just like a camel.
