  2. Brainstorming • How many types of natural disasters can you think of? Rank them from the most frightening to the least frightening. You have five minutes.

  5. Before Picture Discussion • Watch the small news clip on the Los Angeles earthquake. • Discuss how people’s lives were affected by the earthquake in the video clip. • What are some other ways people are affected when a serious earthquake occurs?

  6. Partner Discussion • Are you afraid of natural disasters? How about man-made disasters, like an airplane crash? Which is scarier? • Have you ever experienced a natural disaster? If yes, what happened?

  7. Picture Discussion • What type of disaster is each picture? • Describe it. • What causes it? • What can it do? How does it affect people?

  8. Disaster Preparation • Are you prepared for a disaster? • What can you do to prepare for a disaster? • Does your family have a plan for what to do in the event of an earthquake?

  9. Disaster Preparation • In a group of two or three make a list of all the things you should have in a disaster kit. You need to be able to say what things should be in this kit and why you chose those things. Choose one speaker to present your ideas to the class.

  10. Video Clip • Watch the video clip “Emergency preparedness” • What did the man recommend people store in case of an emergency? • Do you think anything else should be added to his list? Why?

  11. Group Evacuation Plan • You and the partners in your group are living next to Tianjin. There has been an earthquake in Hawaii and there has been a tsunami warning. It will arrive in Tianjin within 5 hours. • Make an evacuation plan with your group. - Where will you go? - How will you get there? - Will you bring anything?

  12. Natural Disasters • Have you ever seen a movie about a natural disaster? If yes, briefly explain the movie. • Does your country experience natural disasters? If yes, what kind and how often?

  13. Partner Discussion • What would you do if you knew there would soon be a serious natural disaster and this could be your last day on earth?

  14. 2012 • Watch the trailer for 2012. • While you are watching write down • 1) Every object you see. E.g. wave, rock etc. • 2) Every natural event you see. E.g. Earthquake.

  15. 2012 • With your partner discuss what you think will happen in the year 2012.

  16. Storm Chasers • Some people chase tornadoes. They drive as close as possible to experience the amazing power of nature. What adjectives would you use to describe these people? Why did you choose these adjectives?

  17. Storm Chasers • Watch the short video clip. • What do you think about the actions of the people in the video? • How can people protect themselves against tornadoes?

  18. Storm Chasers Debate • You are a politician in the U.S.A and numerous people have been killed chasing tornadoes. You are wanting to make a new law making it illegal to chase storms. However, there is a lot of opposition to this law. Many people argue that it goes against freedom of individual choice. • One team must argue against the chasing of storms and the other team argues for it.
