In 2010, schools began linking School-to-Work (STW) programs with priority areas outlined by the Office of Schools. This collaboration involved 47 schools integrating STW into their management plans, increasing visibility and connection within the community. Key initiatives included adopting Career and Transition teams in 35 schools and training Transition Advisers, emphasizing action research as a method for effective educational practices. The focus on student pathways and collaborative projects aims to improve educators' approaches to enhancing students' transition to post-school opportunities.

STW in 2010. • We began the process of explicitly linking STW and Office of Schools priority areas. 47 schools state that STW is part of the schools management plan- 2011 will be making those links stronger and more explicit across the school and its community • 35 schools have adopted a Career and Transition team approach • WSR 11 trained Transition Advisers • 26 schools used the Student Pathways Survey predominantly with Year 10.
Reflections from the 2010 process • Projects / activities did not link project outcomes to STW plan or the schools management plan • Insufficient detail
What is Action Research? • Action research can be described as a family of research methodologies which pursue action (or change) and research (or understanding) at the same time. In most of its forms it does this by: • using a cyclic or spiral process which alternates between action and critical reflection and • in the later cycles, continuously refining methods, data and interpretation in the light of the understanding developed in the earlier cycles. • Dick, Bob (1999) What is action research? Action Research : • Deals with your problems not someone else’s • Can start now or whenever you are ready and will give immediate results • Promotes the strengthening of relationships between staff • Provides schools with alternate ways of viewing and approaching educational questions and subsequently a new way of examining their own practices.
