  4. Figurative Language • “…she could kill in her sleep.” • “Out of reach, I pull out with a screech..” • “"as black as coal..” • “As nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”

  5. VOCABULARY • Abjure-means to swear off, and it applies to something you once believed. You can abjure a religious faith, you can abjure your love of another person, and you can abjure the practice of using excessive force in interrogation. • -abstemious-Reserve abstemious for someone who exercises restraint, especially with regard to alcohol. A rock musician may sing about enjoying wine and women, but in his private life he may be abstemious.

  6. Vocabulary • Disown-To disown someone is to reject them. If you disown your brother, you refuse to have anything to do with him: not only do you not speak or have contact, but it's as if he's no longer related to you. • Repudiate-To repudiate something is to reject it, or to refuse to accept or support it. If you grow up religious, but repudiate all organized religion as an adult, you might start spending holidays at the movies, or just going to work.
