  2. Create a new document within Google Drive. • At the top of the page record your name and partner’s name. • Share the document with your partner. • Brainstorm 3-5 science fair project ideas. For each idea: • Write a 30-50 word summary of the experiment • Write a problem statement identifying each variable • i.e. How does light (IV) affect the movement (DV) of earthworms. • IV-Independent Variable • DV-Dependent Variable • When complete, print the brainstorming sheet and show Mrs. Cullivan for project approval. 3. Project Idea Due by December 16th • Grade Level Appropriate • Unique and Creative • No Brand Comparisons • Measurable (Both Variables) • How does ____ affect _____? • Not obvious • Avoid Animal Experiments • Inhumane Science Fair Idea Criteria

  4. Helps you understand the theory behind your experiment. • Teachers and science fair judges like to see that you understand why your experiment turned out the way it did. • 1. Identify the keywords in the question for your science fair project. • 2. Use a table with the "question words" (why, how, who, what, when, where) to generate research questions from your keywords. • 3. Throw out irrelevant questions. • 4. Network with other people with more experience than yourself: your mentors, parents, and teachers. Ask them: "What science concepts should I study to better understand my project?" and "What area of science covers my project?" Better yet, ask even more specific questions. • 5. If you are doing an engineering project, be sure to include questions from Engineering & Programming Project Tips. Background Research

  5. Visit the background research link to the right. Open and read through all information tabs. • You must complete a background research plan before beginning your experiment. It will be a required part of your log book. • You must develop a research plan similar to the example provided. • You will need 5 cited sources. You may not use Wikipedia. • Use the information provided to choose you sources carefully. • Use the many examples to correctly cite your sources (references). • Research plan is due Friday December 20th.
