The WASHTech initiative focuses on implementing a Technology Assessment Framework (TAF) to enhance sustainable sanitation technologies across Uganda, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. This framework serves as a comprehensive tool for assessing the appropriateness of various sanitation technologies, ensuring that all stakeholders—including governments, private sector, and communities—are involved in the assessment process. By analyzing financial, social, environmental, legal, and technological aspects, this collaborative approach aids in planning, monitoring, and improving the introduction of sustainable sanitation solutions, facilitating impactful changes in these regions.

The Technology Assessment Framework • A tool for national governments, local governments, donors, private sector….. • Helps assess if a technology is appropriate or not • Helps to analyse, plan and monitor introduction process • Involves all relevant stakeholders in different phases of assessment process • Triggers direct exchange between sector actors
The Technology Assessment Framework • First stage: • Selection of of target area and of key actors, fieldwork to collect data for screening on “need” and “applicability” • Second stage Fieldwork for assessment indicators: • Financial • Social • Environmental • Legal/institutional • Knowledge/skills • Technology Perspectives of: -User/Buyer -Producer/Provider -Regulator/Supervisor
The Technology Assessment Framework • Third stage: • Scoring workshop produces profile based on set of guided questions • Scores and profile developed in group workshop, assuring higher transparency of result • Profile indicates key areas of risks and potential improvements of technology and introduction process • TAF: final TAF Result Sheet with comprehensive interpretation and specific recommendation
TAF testing • Several rounds of testing on a variety of WASH technologies in all three countries • Includes UDDTs in Uganda
