  2. Personal Information • Whina Cooper was born on the 9th of December 1895. she grew up in a little tribe called Te Rawara. She achieved a lot of wonderful things in her life. She is most remembered for leading the Maori land rights. She died on March 26th 1994 at the age of 98. Whina Cooper was at the age of 13 when she was sent to St. Joseph’s Maori Girls College in Napier for her secondary school education. Whina was married twice and brought up six children of her own. .

Accomplishments • Whina inspired Maori land development schemes in the northern region during the 1930s. • She was the first chair woman of the Maori Women's Welfare League, which she founded in 1951 which raised awareness of Maori people’s rights.She went all around the country speaking at the various branches and explaining the aim of the Maori Womens’ Welfare League. • She organized a march to Te Hapua (near top of North island) she led 5000 people to parliament in Wellington and presented concerns to parliament that Maori people wanted Maori land back.

  4. Qualities She was a great leader and fought for what she thought was right and never gave up. She was strong and fought against parliament and was also humble.

  5. Your Choice She was involved with farm development schemes along with Sir Apirana Ngata. In 1975 a group was formed to fight to get Maori land back. Whina became leader of “To Roopu o Te Matakite”. She was always involved with trying to make life better for Maori people, and was also good friends with Princess Te Puia. We chose Whina Cooper because she helped Maori get their land back.
