  6. The History of Scarecrows • China Scarecrows • One day morning, a fisherman caught a scarecrow when he fished in the Changjiang river. And then, he took the scarecrow home. Originally, there were lots of mice which are unafraid of fisherman’s cats. And then, all of the fisherman’s family can’t sleep in every night

  7. China Scarecrows • Unexpectedly, on one night, all of the fisherman’s family had a good night. After last night, the fisherman was filled of doubt about where the mice went? Suddenly, the fisherman got the answer. He thought that it was the scarecrow’s help. The mice were afraid of the scarecrow.

  8. China Scarecrows • Finally, the fisherman publicized this event to all of village. And then, a lot of famers use scarecrow to drive away other harmful animals like Voles and crows. They found that it was useful too. Famers use scarecrow widely after this event.

  10. The History of Scarecrows • Egyptian Scarecrows The first scarecrows in recorded history were made along the Nile River to protect wheat fields from flocks of quail. Egyptian farmers put wooden frames in their fields and covered them with nets. The farmers hid in the fields and scared the quail into the nets. Then they took them home and ate them for dinner!

  12. The History of Scarecrows • Japanese Scarecrows Japanese farmers also began making scarecrows to protect their rice fields, about the same time the Greeks and Romans made their wooden statues.  At first the Japanese farmers hung old rags, meat, or fish bones from bamboo poles in their fields.  Then they set the sticks on fire and the smell was so bad that birds and other animals stayed away from the rice.

  13. Japanese Scarecrows • The Japanese farmers called their Scarecrows kakashis which means something that smells badly.  Soon Japanese farmers also made scarecrows that looked like people.  They were dressed in a raincoat made of reeds and a round straw hat that rose to a peak in the middle.  Bows and arrows were often added to make them look more threatening.  These scarecrows were also called kakashis even if they didn't stink!

  15. Scarecrows Today • Farmers still use scarecrows all over the world.  In countries like India and some Arab nations, old men sit in chairs and throw stones at the birds who try to eat their crops just like the bird scarers of long ago.

  16. Scarecrows Today • During the growing season scarecrows still stand in fields around the world and each fall many communities have scarecrow contests like the Zuni children did.  As long as birds are hungry farmers will look for ways to SCARE CROWS!

  17. The News of Scarecrows • Georgia town seeks scarecrow world record • 73-year-old farmer turns herself into scarecrow

  19. Georgia town seeks scarecrow world record • In a bid to break a world record, residents are building hundreds of scarecrows — traditionally human figures stuffed with straw and dressed in old clothes to keep farm fields clear of crows and other wildlife. • In Hoschton, there’s a mannequin dressed as a scuba diver, the Georgia Bulldogs football team and — of course — the cast of the Wizard of Oz. Even likenesses of Jesus and Elvis popped up.

  20. Georgia town seeks scarecrow world record • The 1,700 real residents of Hoschton hope to nearly triple their population with 4,000 scarecrows and break the Guinness World Record for “Most Scarecrows in One Location.” • The title belongs to the Cincinnati Horticultural Society’s Cincinnati Flower and Farm Fest, which set the record in 2003 with 3,311 scarecrows. • Antique dealer Robbie Bettis and her husband, Fred, are leading the effort for the town’s fall festival, which begins Monday.

  21. Georgia town seeks scarecrow world record • On Wednesday they watched over an assembly line at an old downtown train depot, where about 20 people passed wooden frames among tables of dingy clothes, yellow milk jugs, plastic grocery bags, old hats, twine, ribbon and other donated materials • Crows and criminals beware: Two men caught knocking over scarecrows were sentenced to build 25 of them, lest they face trespassing charges, Mayor Bill Copenhaver said.

  23. 73-year-old farmer turns herself into scarecrow • TAITUNG, Taiwan -- It has been two weeks since a 73 year-old farmer surnamed Chen began to station herself in her millet fields in a village in Taitung County, southeastern Taiwan, to safeguard her crops from marauding sparrows. • It is now harvest season for millet in the county’s Taimati township — one of Taiwan’s key granaries. In Chen’s fields, golden millet spikes shine under the sun, luring hungry birds.

  24. 73-year-old farmer turns herself into scarecrow • Watching the crops her family shed sweat to cultivate, Chen said “now is the real hard work” to safeguard the fields from the hordes of sparrows after her precious seeds. • “The army will sweep through as soon as I lose focus,” said the old lady sitting on a stool, holding an umbrella and a bell to scare the birds away.

  25. 73-year-old farmer turns herself into scarecrow • Chen has erected in her fields as many and various bird-scaring devices as she can, including scarecrows and a network of “alarm strings” hung with used election banners, empty cans and bottles, even a national flag. • Upon spotting possible attackers, she pulls the strings, saying that “one minute too slow and all our painstaking efforts are wasted.”

  26. 73-year-old farmer turns herself into scarecrow • Chen stays in the fields from before dawn, until after the sun sets. • There are still two more days before the harvest, she went on, adding that until then, she cannot leave her post.

  30. Southern Taiwan University of Technology study of solar scarecrow Farmers used old clothes and straw hat to make the scarecrow in the past. Because the scarecrow are motionless, the sparrows are not afraid of it. Deterrent effect is limited, the sparrows still eat rice, completely losing the effectiveness of the scarecrow.
