  1. High Availability Services Business Continuity The New Frontier Michael Bennett, NSD and Co-Founder BlueBridge Networks

  2. Who is BlueBridge? BlueBridge Networks owns and operates state-of the-art, Internet Data Centers, specializing in Disaster Avoidance (“DA”) and Business Continuity (“BC”) Services. 3. Paradigm Shift? A Paradigm Shift Defined Thomas Kuhn in “The Structure of Scientific Revolution” argued that scientific advancement is not evolutionary, but rather is a "series of peaceful interludes punctuated by intellectually violent revolutions", and in those revolutions "one conceptual world view is replaced by another". More simply defined, a Paradigm Sift is a shift of thinking from one way to another. This shift does not just occur but rather is driven byagents of change.

  4. A Paradigm Shift? Agents of Change • Violent Natural Disasters • Power Infrastructure Failures • Terrorism • Localized Disasters • Viruses, Hackers etc…

  5. A Paradigm Shift? Agents of Change • Violent Natural Disasters • Power Infrastructure Failures • Terrorism • Localized Disasters • Viruses, Hackers • Death by

  6. What is Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity? A Paradigm Shift FROM: Disaster Recovery (DR) is the process an organization undergoes to ensure that essential IT functions are restored after a disaster. TO: Business Continuity (BC) is the process an organization undergoes to prevent the interruption or loss of access to mission-critical data and applications.

  7. Paradigm shift 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% Disaster Recovery Perceptions Hardware/Software Failures Viruses, hackers, external threats Natural disasters Accidental/malicious behavior Terrorism/man-made disasters Source: Dynamic Markets

  8. Paradigm Shift Why Practice Disaster Recovery? • Disaster Recovery Makes up 90% of DR & BC Budgets nationally < 1% chance of occurring • More Realistic is an Infrastructure Failure • 50% of outages are power or plumbing related • Death by 1000 cuts • Perception is reality Outage = Failure to anticipate Source: Gartner

  9. Paradigm Shift Disaster Recovery Doesn’t Work? • During a regional disaster, Air travel is OUT! • Non-Dedicated DR environments are prone to failure. • First Come-First Serve • Many firms were unable to access Disaster Recovery Centers after Katrina • Tape Backup is an antiquated & unreliable: • 40-50% of all backups are not fully recoverable • 60% of backups Fail in General • 20% of Enterprise Environments suffer failure during restore from tape!

  10. Not All Applications are Created Equally Classifying Business Process Service Levels in Project Life Cycle Class Business Process Services Service Levels Class 1 Customer - /Partner - Facing 24x7 scheduled n n (BTB) Functions Critical to 99.9% availability (<45 min./mo.) n n Revenue Production RTO = two hrs.; RPO = zero hrs. n Class 2 Less - Critical Revenue - 24x6 - 3/4 scheduled n n Producing Functions 99.5% availability (<3.5 hrs./mo.) n Supply Chain n RTO = 8 - 24 hrs.; RPO = four hrs. n Class 3 Enterprise Back - Office 18x7 scheduled n n Functions 99% availability (<5.5 hrs./mo.) n RTO = three days; RPO = one day n Class 4 Departmental Functions 24x6 - 1/2 scheduled n n 98% availability (<13.5 hrs./mo.) n RTO = five days; RPO = one day n

  11. BC Strategies Based on Criticality of Business Processes • Two sites within ~ 50 km • Hot standby (dedicated); Class 1 In-house or out-sourced (RTO & RPO ~ 0) Facilities and serviced • Mirrored data Class 2 • Shadowed data (RTO = 8 – 24 hours • In - house or outsourced RPO = 4 hours) • Standard recovery from tape Class 3 (RTO = 72 hours • Outsourced usually more cost RPO = 24 hours) effective (hot site or mobile) • Quick ship program most - Class 4 cost - effective (RTO = 4 – 5 days RPO = 24 hours) • Standard recovery from tape

  12. Paradigm Shift RTO & RPO slope is reducing dramatically
