  1. Gospel Presentation for Sunday, October 27, 2013 Lance Castillo 6E Block 1 Religion Miss Austin 10/24/13

  2. Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.‘ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbleshimself will be exalted." Luke 18:9-14

  3. This Gospel reminds us that God sees inside your heart and knows whether your doing his will or just concerned with your outer appearance and your place in society. As Catholics, we should humble ourselves and shouldn’t put ourselves in a higher place than others. Like the tax collector, we should praise God and ask for His mercy and for the forgiveness of our sins. If we are boastful like the Pharisee, we would be humbled in the afterlife and the people who have humbled themselves will be praised before you. In conclusion, as Catholics we should realize God’s mercy and be humble in seeking God’s forgiveness. We should give more importance to what happens to us in the afterlife and not consume ourselves with worldly rewards and recognition. Summary

  4. Ask yourself, If your were the Pharisee what could you have done to avoid the mistakes in the parable? • What does being humble mean to you? Reflect on a time you humbled yourself to God. Reflection Questions
