Analysis of PM2 Slit Function for GOME-2 FM202-2: Error and Impact Assessment

This report details the analysis of the PM2 slit function for the GOME-2 FM202-2 satellite instrument, focusing on linear error mappings and dominant error sources, particularly wavelength registration. We observe significant Gaussian broadening effects at the 0.5mm slit width and variations in slit functions across different focal plane assemblies (FPAs). The findings suggest considerable changes in the slit function behavior, implications for ozone profile retrieval, and highlight the necessity for improved wavelength accuracy. Recommendations for data refinement are also provided.

  2. GOME-2 FM202-2: PM2Slit function analysis • Linearly mapped error analysis for FM202-2 • Dominant error – wavelength registration? • Note larger Echelle angular range used cf. 2004 • Gaussian broadening more significant on 0.5mm (expected) • New vs. old • 0.5mm +/-10% • 1.0mm +/-20% • Codes in plots: FM202-{ver}_{slit_width}_{order}[g] • {ver} : 1= 2004, 2 = 2012 • {slit_width} : _1_0 = 1mm, _0_5 = 0.5mm • {order} : (not present)=main order, _1=overlapping • “g”= SFS Gaussian broadened

  3. SFS shape Order 1mm / 0.5mm New / old 1mm New 1mm/old 0.5mm

  4. SFS shape New (GB)/Old 0.5mm New (no GB)/Old 0.5 Old 1mm Order Old 1mm /0.5mm

  5. Conclusions • Large change in FPA1,3,4 slit functions • Some change in FPA2 • Wavelength registration for FM202-2 still dominant error source (FM202-1 more consistent) • SFS shape significant (particularly 0.5mm slit) • Impact on O3 profile? Wls error dominated? • Need to improve wavelength information: • Remove extreme Echelle angel data? • Retrieve?
