The Effect of Fertilizer Mix on Marigold Growth

This experiment investigates the impact of different fertilizer mixtures (2%, 5%, and 10%) on the growth rate of marigold plants. The study includes a detailed procedure, data analysis, and recommendations for future research. The hypothesis states that marigolds grown in the 10% fertilizer mix will exhibit a 25% higher growth rate compared to those grown in the 2% or 5% mixtures.

  1. Title of Experiment Titles should be creative and the letter size large Data Abstract Background Computer graphs. Include one paragraph of data analysis See guidelines for Abstract This is a report on the topic of the experiment. Pitch size should be either 10 or 12. The layout of the background report on the board is student preference. Science FairIntro&Refresher Purpose Conclusion Procedure One paragraph 18 pitch The procedure is a detailed step by step process of your experiment. List steps vertically with numbers. Use 16-18 pitch One paragraph. Include recommendations 18 pitch Hypothesis Sentence- 18 pitch DATA NOTEBOOK Either a spiral or stapled pages with a cover sheet of “Data Notebook” to display in front of the board. This contains all collected experimentation results.

  2. Why Science Fair Applied science • Enhancement of critical thinking and problem solving skills  Development of presentation skills

  3. Project Planning Develop a project plan with your child • experimentation • project assembly

  4. FORMS Required for all projects  Certain projects require prior approval before experimenting ISEFhttp://www.societyforscience.org/isef/document Students Upload forms to S: drive on Abington Network upload pathway (shared/student work/Science Fair Paperwork 2011/teacher folder) We can lick gravity, but sometimes the paperwork is overwhelming. ~Wernher von Braun

  5. Purpose • Reason for research and experimentation! • Make science come alive • Get and give! We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~Winston Churchill

  6. Engineering Projects Somewhat different format. Please review ISEF website info and talk with/email Mr. Keller or Mrs. Grande. http://www.societyforscience.org/document.doc?id=12 A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. ~Freeman Dyson

  7. Variables • Independent- manipulated during experiment • Dependent- results (report in data analysis) • Control- validate experiment • Extraneous- whoops! Need to mitigate; otherwise retest. One person’s constant is another person’s variable. ~Alan Perlis

  8. Fertilizer effect on Marigold Growth Independent Variable 2% fertilizer mix 5% fertilizer mix 10% fertilizer mix Dependent Variable Growth rate (cm) Control Variable 0% fertilizer mix Potting containers Amount of H2O (mL) Sun exposure Extraneous Variable Animal Age of seeds Health of soil

  9. Research • Discussion of topic, purpose and/or variables • 2-3 typed pages in MLA format Research is creating new knowledge. ~Neil Armstrong

  10. Hypothesis • Prediction based on research • Numerically based! • Include variables The only relevant test of the validity of a hypothesis is comparison of prediction with experience. ~Milton Friedman

  11. Fertilizer effect on Marigold Growth Marigolds grown in the 10% fertilizer mix will have a 25% higher growth rate than marigolds grown in 2 or 5% fertilizer mix.

  12. Procedure • Detailed, step by step directions • METRIC measurements not standard (U.S.A.) You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change… the procedure, the process is its own reward. ~Amelia Earhart

  13. Data Collection • Data notebook in 2D • Dated • Detailed • Trials and trials!!! In the spirit of science, there really is no such thing as a "failed experiment." Any test that yields valid data is a valid test. ~Adam Savage

  14. Plant Projects to Include: • 10 containers of each fertilizer mix • Soil and fertilizer measured in grams • Water amount in mL

  15. Data Analysis • Discussion of variables and data collection • Reference graphs and tables (computerized) • Digital imagery Get the habit of analysis - analysis will in time enable synthesis to become your habit of mind. ~Frank Lloyd Wright

  16. Conclusion • Accuracy of hypothesis • Recommendations for change • Impact I think and think for months and years. Ninety-nine times, the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right. ~Albert Einstein

  17. Display • Professional- no tape, hand writing/drawing • Use photos- no faces • Limit colors for matting Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself. ~Paul Bryant

  18. Parental Input Your role: - Refine project components - Lab assistant - Typist; glue artist You [do] not help another by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves. ~Abraham Lincoln
