    2. Roman Republic Romans were once ruled by a tyrannical foreign king. After independence, Roman leaders vowed never to be ruled again by a king. Romans founded a type of representative govt called a republic

    3. Duty, Discipline, Sacrifice Duty was ingrained in Romans from birth no complaining hard work obedience to parents & authority In wartime, Roman soldiers provided their own weapons & food. Units of soldiers who ran away in battle were rounded up and decimated (every 10th man was executed by the others).

It did not have a dark or Middle Ages like Western Europe had, so learning and progress continued there. The Byzantine Empire was conquered in 1453 by the Muslim Ottoman Turks.
