  1. The Prince: Concerning Principalities III (Questions 10-14) By: Patrick Czichas, Zack Lui, Charles Heng, Dylan Sherman, and Bryce Neighbor

  2. Question 10 • Why is it best to prepare for future troubles with energy? • It is best to prepare this way because you can solve your troubles before they become incurable. You have more of a chance to stop the problem before it is too big of a problem to fix.

  3. Question 11 • What is a pensioner, and why would it have been better for Louis to have left a pensioner of his own as king of Naples? • A pensioner is a hireling who attends to whatever his employer requires. It would have been better for Louis to use a pensioner because the person he put in charge removed laws that Louis put there himself. A pensioner wouldn’t have done that because if he did, he would no longer have a job.

  4. Question 12 • Explain why there is sometimes praise in wanting to acquire new territory and sometimes folly and blame in the same desire. • A leader who wants to expand their boundaries can be seen as a way to help the nation with more resources, while another opinion is that the leader just wants to conquer lands to be glorified and start wars for no other reason than to feed his ego.

  5. Question 13 • Why is committing a blunder to avoid a war a mistake? • A blunder can’t avoid a war. If anything, the blunder will only differ to your disadvantage when the war actually happens. The blunder will cause more problems for you in the long run in the war.

  6. Question 14 • In your own words, explain the general rule that Machiavelli gives at the end of this section. • Whoever is responsible for is next in power is ruined because the leader was put into power by either astuteness or force. This means that the general public will distrust him because he was forced upon them to lead.
