  3. Post-Mao China During the Cultural Revolution, a group known as the Gang of Four rose to prominence. The Gang of Four, which included Mao’s wife, were radical Communists who sought to control the arts and education. Opposed to the Gang of Four were moderates like Zhou Enlai, the Chinese Premier (runs the Chinese government), and Deng Xiaoping. Deng was actually sent to a forced labor camp during the Cultural Revolution, but was later recalled to government by Zhou. Zhou died in January 1976, and Mao died in September 1976. This cleared the way for the moderates to oust the Gang of Four from power and imprison them. By the late 1970s Deng had secured paramount leadership of China.
