  1. Mock exam feedback

  2. Question 1(a) • Low level question • 2 marks + 2 marks • Be clear with your answer: • 1 mark for stating criteria • 1 mark for elaboration

  3. Question 1(a) • Name all the 6 criteria for Jahoda’s definition of ideal mental health: • Master of environment • Self actualisation • Autonomy • Integration • Accurate perception of relaity

  7. Question 2 • 4 marks = A01 • 5 minutes • Content: • Main assumptions – 1 sentence • CC / OC / SLT – probably not all 3 in 5 minutes (choose 2)

  8. Question 2 • Chief examiners comment: ‘Some candidates failed to gain full marks because they did not make the link with psychopathology.’ What is your target based on this feedback?

  9. Question 2 - Mark scheme • 2 marks for identifying at least 2 features • 2 marks for further elaboration • For full marks there must be a link to psychopathology.

  10. Question 2 • CC – phobias • A UCS (e.g. feeling pain) spontaneously produces a UCR (e.g. feeling fear). • If the UCS is frequently associated with a NS (stung by a wasp), this then eventually becomes the CS • The CS (stung by a wasp) will then produce the CS of feeling fear • According to CC, the individual has learned to associate wasps with fear and therefore the phobia is learned

  11. Question 2 • SLT – eating disorders • Anorexia can be learned through observing similar role models • By observing underweight role models (celebrities) receive positive reinforcement for being so thin (e.g. social approval, praise), individuals form mental representation of receiving similar rewards (vicarious learning) so imitate behaviour

  12. Question 3 • State limitation • Elaborate on limitation • Refer to the approach, not treatment • Read the question

  13. Question 4(a) • 2 techniques – state clearly • 1 mark for stating technique • 1 mark for elaboration of technique • Free association – • Dream analysis -

  14. Question 4(b) • 2 marks for any limitations • 1 limitation and elaborate • 2 limitations in less detail • ‘It’s expensive’ – in comparison to?

  15. Question 4(c) • Answer the question • Refer to the stimulus material • What is Sally’s ‘problem’? • Why is CBT appropriate? • Link answer with the aim of CBT.

  16. Question 5 • A01 – 4 marks • 5 minutes • Read the question • ‘the use of ECT’

  17. Question 5 • Look at your notes for ECT. • Make notes on at least FOUR procedural steps in how ECT is used.

  18. Use of ECT • Patient receives muscle relaxant and anaesthetic • Electrodes attached to either one side (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral) of temples • Current passed through brain for half a second • Current induces convulsions which last up to a minute • Treatment given 2 or 3 times a week for 3 or 4 weeks
