  2. Do Now- Page *** • There is a bully at school who usually only picks on the “small, dorky” kids. You do not think it is nice, but let it happen because it does not threaten you. You have been in a fight with this bully before and want to avoid another fight at ALL COSTS! • The bully then picks on some classmates of yours who you are not really friends with, but you like. You nicely ask the bully to stop picking on your classmates and he promises he will just pick on those dorky kids from now on. • Suddenly, one day, the bully starts to pick a fight with your two best friends. You still do not want to stay out of it, but they are your best friends! What do you do? • Stay out of it completely • Help your two friends by cheering them on and giving them tips on how to fight the bully. • Jump in with your two friends and fight back against the bully

  5. 1) Isolationism • WWII begins in 1939 • U.S. stays neutral (non involvement) • Neutrality acts of 1935, ‘36, and ’37 to keep U.S. out of war abroad • Fear same horrors from World War I • http://vimeo.com/21421753

  6. 2) Internationalism • U.S. favors the Allies (Great Britain, France, USSR) • But, the Neutrality Acts prevent U.S. from helping warring nations (cannot sell weapons to nations at war) • Germany invades France, attacks Britain. • Lend-Lease Act: Lend weapons and supplies to Britain http://vimeo.com/21421776 • Start 3:05

  7. 3) Intervention • Germany makes Japan an Axis power hoping to threaten U.S. from entering a war • Japan expands in Pacific and U.S. stops selling Japan oil/supplies • Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, HI: Dec 7, 1941 • 18 Navy Ships destroyed • 2,400 dead • 1,200 wounded • U.S. Declares war on Japan • http://vimeo.com/21421792
