  1. Final Project Frozen Yogurt Vs. Ice Cream By: Dakota McEwen, Samantha McCracken, Jovanna De la Pena

  2. Which is more preferable?Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream? Research Question

  3. Design the Study and the Sample • Our Population is BYU-Idaho students • Null Hypothesis: There is no difference between preferences in frozen yogurt or ice cream • Ho: p = 0 • Alternative Hypothesis= Frozen yogurt is preferred over ice cream • Ha: p < 0 • The sampling method we used was a systematic sample surveying every 4th person. • We drew a card between 1 and 6. The card we drew was a 2 so we started with the second person. • We surveyed people in the Manwaring Center. This is a main center of travel which gives us an accurate representation of the BYU-I student population

  4. Collect the Data • We learned that collecting data can sometimes be difficult. • We collected data the way we designed it, in a main building and during a busy time of the day • People rejecting us or answering that they didn’t like either option were things we had not anticipated.

  5. Describe the data P-hat= Standard deviation= 0.046 Our null hypothesis stated there is no difference in the preference of frozen yogurt and ice cream but our results show something different: that ice cream seems to be preferred.

  6. Make Inference • The statistical procedure we chose to use was a One Proportion z test • Checking Requirements: • n= 116 ≥ 5 • np= 58 ≥ 10 and n(1-p)= 58≥ 10

  7. Make inference cont. • Our data meets the requirements for our hypothesis test. As the slide before shows all of our numbers were greater than the minimum requirement. In fact we used a rather large sample sixe, thus insuring we have more accurate data results.

  8. Make Inference Cont. Tests Results P-value= 0.992 Confidence Interval= 0.304, 0.479 Based on the P-value and α we fail to reject the null hypothesis. We have insufficient evidence to suggest that frozen yogurt is preferable over ice cream. Our results show that our alternative hypothesis was not correct because frozen yogurt is not preferable over ice cream. • Null Hypothesis: There is no difference in the preference in frozen yogurt and ice cream • Ho: p= 0 • Alternative Hypothesis: Frozen yogurt is preferred over ice cream • Ha: p< 0 • α= 0.05 • Confidence interval: 0.304 and 0.479 • We are 95% confident that the true proportion of students who prefer yogurt is between 0.304 and 0.479

  9. Take action • Suggestions that we would have for further study would to broaden the sample size to a much larger number. Another suggestion would be to ask more than just BYU-I students, include members of the faculty and even members of the community. • It would also be interesting to see if the data would have changed if while asking the question we had actually had a sample of ice cream and frozen yogurt, so that could be an adjustment made in later studies. • Based on the results of the study we conducted, if BYU-I were to put in an ice cream vendor it would be far more successful than a frozen yogurt vendor. Our study also may have been skewed due to the nostalgia the comes with the thought of ice cream. Which could be a big money maker at a college campus, where a lot of people tend to be homesick • There should be more marketing in Rexburg for frozen yogurt, if people were more aware of it they would probably lean more towards it for a lot of reasons but mainly because it tasted better and it is healthier!
