Some key questions? 1 Why do we have laws? 2Who makes our law in the UK? 3 What is the difference between criminal & civil law? 4 Which courts deal with each? 5 What is the first court that criminal law goes through? 6 What is the highest court in the UK? 7 What is the EU and how does it affect our law? 8 What power does the ECHR (European court of Human Rights) have in the UK? 9 What power does the UN have? 10 Give examples of discrimination law.
  3. Can you remember? 1 What are your rights and responsibilities under the law? 2 What are the rights and responsibilities of the police? 3 Where can you go for legal advice? 4 Why rights do we get from belonging to the EU? 5 What responsibilities does the UK have as members of the EU and the UN?
  4. The EU – 27 member states A political and Economic club with original aim to keep peace in Europe after WW2 by tying French and German coal and steal together eg economically. Main Institutions: The European Council (leaders of state who vote on policies) The Commission – proposes laws (like our civil service) The European Parliament (MEP’s debate laws) The European Court (ECJ) of Justice (concerned with EU law) NOTE the ECJ is not the same as the ECHR which is the institution Making the UK give prisoners the right to vote eg human rights law. 1 What do you need to be to join the EU? 2 What is the Euro? 3 Are there any arguments against the EU – what are they? 4 What is the commonwealth and is it as powerful as the EU? Explain

Prison & Retribution 1 Why do we have prison? 2 What other penalties do we have for crimes in the UK? 3 Are there any problems with prisons? 4 What is the age of criminal responsibility? 5 Do you think children should be sent to prison in the UK? 6 How do the figures compare with other countries? Punishment – Separates offender from friends family and outside world. Public protection – to ensure wider public and victims are safe. Deterrence – To stop them re offending. Rehabilitation – To help them overcome their problems which caused them to offend in the first place eg education, anger management drug/ alcohol problems... Disapproval of society - To show them that it is wrong and not acceptable what they did. Shame
  6. Making law Q Who has the power in parliament on making and passing laws? House of Commons (MP’s) House of Lords (Lords) The Crown (Queen) Green paper ---- White paper----- Bill----- 1st reading------- Committee stage------ 2nd reading------- (Lords) 3rd Reading............... Act of Parliament. The QUEEN DOES not make laws and has no control or power over them she merely signs her name on them – eg we are a democracy.
  7. UN – Peace, Security &Human Rights: Life, security, healthcare, Freedom of conscience, Freedom of speech, protest etc... The role of the UN and power of it or lack of power of it. Think about the use of the veto by any of the big 5 which can stop decisions being made. So many members a slow laborious process to hold meeting on big matters and to get any agreement. The power of the Big 5 – 3 democracies and 2 autocracies.
