What is the Internet? • The internet is a global network of millions of computers that are linked to share information, news and opinions. • Web pages are written in a special computer language so we use a program like Internet Explorer to translate the web page into a form that is easy to read. • Anyone can create a webpage!
Internet Safety – Reliable Sites • Not everything you see on the internet is correct or true. A reliable site is one created by a company or organization you trust • Anyone can make a website. Watch out for opinions that are presented as facts, especially on science pages. • Many websites contain information that is incorrect.
Protecting Your Personal Information • The internet is usually not private. Be careful about giving out your private information • Think before you give out information about your credit cards or banks. Make sure you are on a reliable site. • Only shop at stores you recognize or trust.
Protecting Your Children • Watch you children while they are on the internet. Have the computer in a public place. • Find out their passwords and log-in names for MySpace and FaceBook • You can get computer programs that stop children from going to certain sites. These are great for when you are unable to see yourself.
