James chapter four addresses several problems. • Wars and strife • Worldliness • Speaking evil of and judging our brethren • Arrogant boasting • Failing to do good (which is sin) PRIDE
Pride is a great problem for man. • Pride is hated by God (Prov. 6:16-17). • Pride brings destruction (Prov. 16:18). • Pride is one of Satan’s avenues of temptation (1 John 2:16).
1. Pride Leads To Strife vs. 1-4 • Strife with others (v. 1) • Strife with self (vs. 1-3) • Strife with God (vs. 4-6)
2. Pride Distorts Reality • Life is about seeking and satisfying personal pleasures (vs. 1-2) • The proper objects of our prayers (v. 3) • Seeking friendship with both God and the world (v. 4) • Taking tomorrow for granted (vs. 13-16)
3. Pride Elevates Man Above God • James 4:11-12 • In order to speak evil of and judge our brother, we must have first judged God’s law forbidding such to be unworthy of following. • Doing so puts us in a very dangerous position - sitting in judgment of God and His law.
Overcoming Pride • Submit to God (v. 7) • Resist the devil (v. 7) • Draw near to God (vs. 8-9) • cleanse our hands – seek forgiveness • purify our hearts – repent • lament, mourn, weep – show godly sorrow • Humble ourselves in the sight of God (v. 10)
