  2. The life cycle All animals, including humans, start out as babies and get older. • When babies are born they are very small. • Some animals need their parents to protect them and to help them learn about the world. Seal pup

  3. The life cycle As animals get older they can start to do more things by themselves. They will become bigger and stronger and more able to look after themselves. Seal pup with its mother

  4. The life cycle Once an animal is fully grown it will find a mate. Together they will have their own babies and the cycle will start again. They will continue to grow old and the cycle will end when they die. Baby turtle

  5. The adult penguin lays an egg and looks after it until it hatches. The egg hatches. The penguin chick has fluffy feathers and is looked after by its parents. The chick is a fully grown adult. It can catch all of its own food. The chick grows bigger. Its feathers become thick and oily.

  6. Reproduction Different types of animals reproduce in different ways. All animals need a male and a female to reproduce. Clownfish can change from male to female, if a female in their group dies. Clownfish

  7. Reproduction Humans, which are mammals, give birth to live babies. Babies grow inside the mother before they are born. Seals, whales and otters are all also mammals. Baby seals are often rescued by SEA LIFE after they lose their mothers.

  8. Reproduction Fish, birds and reptiles all lay eggs. The baby grows in the egg and hatches when it becomes big enough. Crocodiles, turtles and snakes are all reptiles.
