  2. Rome fell in 476 A.D. Germanic tribes break down the remnants of Rome

  3. Influence of German Tribes • Decrease in education • Loss of a common language (now people speak in a vernacular language) • Family loyalty more important that loyalty to government… FAMILY FEUD!

  4. The Franks • Only one German state proved to last long- the Franks • Founded by Clovis- began the Merovingian Dynasty • Clovis became Christian in 500 A.D.

  5. During the 7th century, kings lost power and mayors of the palace (major domo) grew in power One example of a major domo is Charles Martel Defeated the Muslims in the Battle of Tours in 732 Franks Lose Power

  6. Charles Martel’s son- also a major domo Fought on behalf of the pope Became king Began the Carolingian dynasty Pepin the Short

  7. Charles the Great • Expanded empire- reunited western Europe • Helped the pope crush an unruly mob • Pope crowned Charlemagne Emperor in 800 A.D. *Dec. 25, 800

  8. December 25, 800 • This date is significant because it joins the Christian, Roman and Germanic worlds! • Also a pope crowned the king!
