  2. What was it? • The youth rejecting the values and ideals of their parents and mainstream society • Replaced by new and drastically different values/ideals • Popularly known as the “Hippie Culture”

  3. What did they oppose? • Young Americans opposed several characteristics of mainstream society • Not enough independence, too much conformity • Too much focus on financial prosperity • Not enough focus on social progress (racial/gender equality)

  4. What it Looked Like • Importance placed on peace and love for everyone • Tolerance for all types of people • Sexual promiscuity • Strange dress styles • Wild colors • Long hair • Drug Use • Marijuana, cocaine, LSD

  5. Counterculture Decline • By the early 70’s, the counterculture was losing support • Drug use became dangerous • Widespread overdose and deaths • Crime began to develop within the counterculture communities • Most young Americans rejoined mainstream society as they got older
