  1. The ALTA Spectrometer Introduction to Remote Sensing Adapted from Fundementals of Remote Sensing http://www.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/ccrs/learn/tutorials/fundam/fundam_e.html

  2. What is remote sensing? • “Remote sensing is the science (and to some extent, art) of acquiring information about the Earth's surface without actually being in contact with it. This is done by sensing and recording reflected or emitted energy and processing, analyzing, and applying that information."

  3. Remote Sensing Process

  4. Active remote sensing Passive remote sensing Detecting radiation

  5. From a near polar orbit these satellite observations cover most of the Earth's surface at least once every sixteen days. Satellites gather data

  6. Digital display Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) Photo Detector On-off switch The ALTA Spectrometer http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/products/spectro.html

  7. ALTA wavelength bands are similar to those of most Earth Observation imaging systems, like LANDSAT, SPOT, and some of AVHRR.

  8. Making a Reflectance Spectrum
