  2. What is the disease? Acne vulgaris is a disease that is when you get pimples on your body.

  3. What is the cause of the disease? Acne is caused by a blockage in a hair follicle/pore. For acne to occur, the pore gets blocked by dead skin. Because of this blockage the sebum gets trapped inside the follicle. The follicle keeps getting filled with sebum like a balloon. At that stage the sebum is infected by a bacterium called P.acnes and it multiplies inside. The follicles is then filled with sebum and bacteria. Acne gets a bit of white inside it called pus. Pus is formed by the dead white cells that fight the P.acnes bacteria. When the follicle has been filled with pus, it eventually bursts.Acne has three different stages:Blackheads and Whiteheads, Pimples and Cysts and nodules. Blackheads and Whiteheads – These are the first stages, the black heads are open at the top and the whiteheads are closed with skin. Pimple – Pimples are the second stage, the follicle gets infected with the bacteria P.acnes. The bacteria multiply due to the absence of air and presence of sebum and dead cells. Cysts and nodules – The third stage acne is inflamed nodules and cysts develop. The nodule extends deeper in the skin and causes scars. A cyst is a sac full of infected sebum, bacteria, dead cells and white blood cells.

  4. Who commonly suffers from the disease? Acne is most common among teenagers both male and female. Three out of four teens will at some stage experience acne. Teenage boys usually have longer lasting and more sever acne compared to girls. Although is most common among teenagers, many adults experience acne outbreaks, as do babies and toddlers.

  5. What are the signs and symptoms of acne? • There are two main types of acne, inflamed and non-inflamed.The symptoms of non-inflamed acne:*Blackheads*Milia*Not red or painful*Bumps/bumpiness across skin surfaceIf non-inflamed acne is left untreated it may progress to inflamed acne. The symptoms of inflamed acne:*Microcomedones*Blackheads*Milia*Papules*Pustules

  7. What are the treatments of acne? Depending on what type of acne you have there are two ways to treat acne. If you have mild to moderate acne, it should be able to be cured by products that your local chemist will sell. Every bodies body reacts differently to the different types of treatment, so if it does not seem to be getting rid of the acne, try another brand until it works. If you have moderately severe to severe acne, you will have to go to a dermatologist to be treated. The chemist products won’t help it so further treatment is needed.

  8. Can acne be cured? Acne can not be totally cured but there are many treatment options out there to control it. As previously mentioned there are many products that prevent and treat acne, but none to cure it.

  9. What are the implications on or impacts of acne on the society Acne does not have a huge impact on society, most people get it at some point of their lives. It does not seem to faze a lot of people but some people are so precious of their image, it can have some bad effects. According to research acne can cause, anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, embarrassment and decreased self esteem. In very rare occasions, acne can also result in being bullied.

  10. Have the number of cases of acne increased or decreased over recent years? It is hard to determine whether there are more or less cases of acne than recent years. Many people get acne and treat it themselves so it is near impossible to get an accurate answer to whether they have increased or decreased
