Development of a Site Selection Tool Using ModelBuilder for House Selection Criteria

This project focuses on creating a Site Selection Tool utilizing ModelBuilder to identify suitable houses based on specific family criteria. The selection process considers various parameters such as house characteristics, proximity to commercial and social buildings, accessibility to work or school, and ease of access to roads. The project leverages a geodatabase that combines housing data with information on commercial activities, social buildings, workplaces, and road networks. It employs a systematic approach by prioritizing selection attributes to ensure optimal housing options are identified efficiently.

  1. Site Selection Tool Development with ModelBuilder An Van Delm // 10-18-2006 // CE697V // Project3

  2. Analytical Process • Problem: select available houses based on the criteria of the family • Criteria: - characteristics of the house - close to certain commercial/social buildings - within a reasonable distance to work/school - fast access to certain roads • Data: geodatabase with housing data (Amelie, Bert, An), commercial activities, social buildings, work/school buildings, roads (source: geodrive)

  3. The Process: Offering Possibilities • Housing characteristics → Select by Attributes Priority 1 • Houses + Work/School Buildings → Select by Location (“within a distance of…”) (in Series) Priority 2 • Houses + Commercial/Social buildings → Select by Location (“within a distance of…”) (in Series) Priority 3 • Houses + Roads → Select different types of Roads → Buffer Roads separately → Intersect Buffers to define common area → Select by Location (houses contained by total buffer) Priority 4 Priority1 + Priority2 + Priority3 + Priority4→ Intersect →Optimal selection of houses

  4. Work/School: Priority 2 Commercial/Social: Priority 3 House characteristics: Priority 1 Distance to Roads: Priority 4

  5. Things to keep in mind… • Large buffers take a lot of time and memory • Network Analyst does not work on ITAP-computers • Difficulties show up on ITAP machine making a Report (also in course ASM 591F) • ArcGIS has all kinds of missing communication links
