Step #1: Self-Assessment • Interests (The questions in an interest inventory ask about your likes and dislikes regarding various activities. Accounting, economics, arts, media science, medicine, law, sociology etc) • Values (include autonomy, prestige, security, interpersonal relations, helping others, flexible work schedule, outdoor work, leisure time, and high salary ) • Skills/Aptitudes (are you more of a public speaker? are you a creative person? Are you a people’s person?)
Know Yourself Conduct your own SWOT analysis • Strengths (Further strengthen your positive points) • Weaknesses (Work on your weaknesses) • Opportunities (recognize and take advantage of the opportunities around you) • Threats (Beware of your threats)
Example • Strength: If you are good at accounting (Strength) you need to work on it to further improve it, however, • Weakness: you may not be able to finish your paper on time (time management is your weakness) that your should work on by practicing. • Opportunity: Admission in business school • Threat: Competition (since you are all ready aware of that, prepare yourself for the admission test)
Step #2: Research (Career Exploration) • Make a list of your career options. • Conduct Informational Interviews in person, phone, or by email. • Gain experience through internships or by job shadowing for one to several days. • Consult professionals and learn from their experiences
Step #3: Decision-Making: • Once you’ve made a thorough self-assessment and done some researching of career options, it’s time to make a decision. • Make a list of career options to choose from • . When exploring careers you will need basic information such as: • Make a list of universities that offer what you want to pursue • Find out about their admission requirements
