  1. SEARCHING YOUR DESTINY! Helpful Hints and Search Techniques for Using Destiny in Middle School Jennifer Kelley SLM 502 Fall 2012

  2. WHAT IS DESTINY? Destiny is an online public access catalog(OPAC). All materials in the library are cataloged in this database. Destiny allows you to search by subject, keyword, author, title, and series.

  3. WHERE CAN I FIND DESTINY? • Where can you access Destiny? • All computers in the school have the Destiny icon. • The library computers are all ready for you to search. • Destiny can also be accessed from home.

  4. GETTING STARTED! On any computer in the school click the Destiny icon on the desktop. The page should look like this:

  5. Click on the catalog tab. This page will appear.

  6. READY TO BEGIN SEARCHING… You can see there are many different ways to search.

  7. SUBJECT SEARCH VS KEYWORD SEARCH SUBJECT SEARCH: Subject searches only return results in which the term being used appears in the subject field. KEYWORD SEARCH: Keyword searches are similar to Internet searches with Google in that the database will look for the words you use wherever they may be on a page. Regardless of whether the word is in a title, author name, place of publication or footnote, the page will be returned as a result.   8. KEYWORD SEARCH: Press the keyword search button. Suppose you want to search for Graphic Novels. You would type in “Graphic Novels” into the search box and hit Keyword. See below:

  9. SO MANY CHOICES! The Keyword search yielded 188 items for Graphic Novels.

  10. I DON’T WANT TO SEARCH THAT MANY BOOKS: Searching 188 books maybe too much for you to look at. You can narrow your search even more if you know what type of Graphic Novel you are looking for. Maybe you are interested in reading mythology graphic novels. See below how you would type this search in:

  11. MUCH BETTER! Your search for mythology graphic novels now only shows you 5 books.

  12. SUBJECT SEARCH: Type slavery here: Use this type of search if you know the Library Of Congress Subject Heading (LSCH). Suppose you want to research slavery (this is a subject heading for LCSH) place “slavery” in search box:

  13. WHAT NEXT? Hit the Subject button:

  14. RESULTS FOR SUBJECT SEARCH This search results 87 books for slavery.

  15. TAKE IT FURTHER Type “slavery emancipation” and hit Subject tab: Now that you have searched for slavery but realized that you only need to see results for Slavery Emancipation. You can search again:

  16. RESULTS: Searching on the subject heading “slavery emancipation” yields 3 books.

  17. SUBJECT SEARCH IDEAS LCHS Subject Heading Search: Influenza Haiku/Children’s Poetry Pollution – water Christianity/Islam/Hindu Foster Care – Fiction Great Britain – history Astronomy Holiday cooking Search Terms: • Information on the flu • Certain types of Poetry • Information on Pollution • Information on certain religion • Stories of Foster Care (fiction) • History of England • Learn about space science • Cooking for the holidays

  18. SPELLING This person misspelled graphic novel but Destiny caught the error. Check your spelling…sometimes if you misspell a word, Destiny won’t recognize the word you are searching. It will ask you if you are trying to spell a word see below:

  19. SPANISH Destiny has the option of changing the language to Spanish. Along the side, there is a button for the Spanish Option.

  21. QUESTIONS After trying to subject and keyword search your topic and you do not think you are getting the results you need, speak to the librarian. Searching can be a challenging task but with practice you will become better at it!
