  1. Ch. 8-1 The Industrial Revolution • Industrial Rev. (1865-1900) rise of manufactured goods in America • Specialized Workers- those with a special skill (nurse, welder, plumber etc.) • Monopolies- goal was to control an entire industry and limit competition

Corporation- a business that is owned by stockholders • Advantages- can raise lots of money really fast and limited liability (only lose what you invest) • Laissez Faire- govt. had a hands off personality or did not interfere • Imperialism- practice of taking over another country for its raw materials

  3. Railroads • RR’s truly united the nation • 1865- 35,000 miles of track • 1900- 260,000 miles of track • Steel- stronger than iron became a major building material

  5. Energy Sources • Coal- source of fuel and heat • Oil- 1st Oil well found in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859 • Oil- used for oil lamps • Electricity- Thomas Edison

  8. Communications • Telegraph- Samuel Morse (Morse Code) 1844 • Made communication faster and the RR’s safer • Telephone- Alexander Graham Bell 1876

  9. Energy Sources & Communication • Discovery of new energy sources and inventions all helped the Industrial Revolution • Many of the things we take for granted today were luxuries in the late 1800’s
