  1. Global Issues Rationale Writing – turning it in to an essay

  2. Step one for the essay… • What did you read, research or hear in a presentation that you are connecting to. What are you linking your text with from Global Issues? What do you want your readers to think, feel, and understand through reading your piece and in regards to the global issue? • Why is your text type a good way to reach your audience?

  3. 1st paragraph During our global issues unit I studied deforestation and its impact on the world and nature. I never considered that there are two sides to every issue and that despite the fact it seems easy to combat the issue of deforestation there are always people who will be detrimentally effected by fixing an issue. I am not saying that we should not fix the problem, but that there will always be those in opposition. I believe that a news article was the best way to show the two sides of this global issue and why it is a global issue without a quick and easy solution. I want my readers to feel for those that depend on logging for survival, but to also understand that deforestation is a serious issue and action needs to be taken before there are no trees left and the earth withers and dies along with the human race.

  4. Step two… • What major idea/message are you trying to get across to your readers through your piece? How is your chosen text type a good way to reach your readers?

  5. 2nd paragraph A news article is a great way to reach a large percentage of the world’s population. My article titled “Sumantra, 1:12 p.m.” would appear in The Times, a widely read paper that could potentially reach millions of people. This paper is not read solely by United States citizens, but those of countries all around the world thanks to the internet. Those reading this paper take the world seriously and that is what I want my readers to do – take deforestation seriously.

  6. 3rd paragraph • In order to achieve your purpose (the above) what tone or mood did you create? Provide some examples from your piece. Explain how these examples create this mood and the intended affect on the reader. • I used formal language to create a serious and objective tone in order to show that this is actually a problem happening today and there are two sides to how this issue affects both the environment and the people who depend on trees for their survival. I used the phrases like “international debt obligations, current policies and government complied” to portray the political sides of deforestation and how the government perceives the need for logging. I used Phrases like “unemployment, can not afford, and how will we feed” to show the seriousness of the issue for both those that are employed by logging companies like DTD and how it affects the working man.

  7. 4th paragraph • Discuss your word choice. Choose 3-4 words and discuss their purpose. What connotations do these words have? What affect do you want to have on your audience by using these words? Do this again with another 2-3 words. • I chose words like “decayed, waste, killers, and barren” because they have the connotative image of death and dying. Through these words I want my readers to feel saddened by the destruction of our natural resources. Word like “unemployed, feed, fire us, cannot afford and grimly” help create the understanding of those who are depended on logging or deforestation to support and feed their families. Finally, I used the repetition of “want” and “consumption” to show that until the demand not longer exists from society that there will continue to be the destruction of forests.

  8. 5th paragraph • Discuss at least one more device. IF this is poetic communication focus on imagery (simile, metaphor, personification) if this is mass communication (anaphora, rhetorical question, use of statistics, testimony, etc…)

  9. 6th paragraph • Discuss the structure of the piece – what kind of sentences you used and why?

  10. Conclusion • Why is this test type the most effective way for you to communicate your purpose? What have you learned through studying this topic?
