  3. To start with… • Not to drive at all is the best way to save fuel/energy • Substitute car trips by env. friendly modes • 1/3 of all trips shorter than 5km • But IF you have to go by car, do it the ECO-DRIVING (E-D for short) way

  4. E-D What do we mean? • Shift into higher gear below 2500 rpm • Maintain steady speed in highest gear possible • Look ahead and anticipate traffic flow • Decelerate leaving the vehicle in gear • No aprupt accelerating or braking

  5. Add. tipps to save fuel • Switch off the engine at short stops • Get rid of unnecessary weight • Avoid roof racks and roof load • Optimize use of Air condition and rear-window defroster • Check tyre pressure regularly • Make use of in-car devices

  6. The advantages of E-D • Enhanced road safety • Reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 10-15% in average • Reduced costs (individually, fleets, economy) • Less wear and tear, less maintainance costs • Less noise nuisance • increased comfort • all at equal travel time

  7. The advantages of E-D • „No regret“, cost-extensive measure to reduce GHG emissions from transport • eg. NL calculates 5-7 € per reduced ton of CO2 • „WOP“ – Window of opportunity • regarding high crude oil and fuel prices

The disadvantages of E-D • No major ones have yet occured! • No rebond effects up to now (in order that people would drive more because of less fuel they use) • Stakeholders (eg. program Manager, developers, suppliers, marketing specialists): despite of all advantages it can still sometimes be challenging to convince them (eg. Driving school organisations)

ECO-DRIVING Austria • 2004: Start of ECO-DRIVING Austria (www.spritspar.at) • Austrian Energy Agency together with • Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (“Lebensministerium”) • Federal Branch Association of Driving Schools • The programme is part of the “klima:aktiv->mobil” initiative aiming to fulfil the Kyoto targets

  19. ECO-DRIVING Austria Main elements • ECO-DRIVING Championship All drivers are invited to take part in this championship in fuel-saving driving style. The competition aims at spreading the idea of ECO-DRIVING among drivers and also among driving schools. • ECO-DRIVING Certificate for driver trainers In pilot seminars some 20 driving teachers have been educated and certified to ECO-DRVIVING-trainers with a certain quality standard. • Co-operation with fleet operators Professional drivers in fleets are invited to take part in an ECO-DRIVING training. From fleets with own trainers (government fleets, railway and bus companies, army etc.) these trainers are invited to take part in the certification courses. • Awareness raising, marketing and public relations The upper parts are accompanied by elements of PR works such as radio spots, print media coverage, folders with tips to save fuel etc.

  28. In-car-devices • Help to monitor and reduce fuel consumption (and follow the E-D principles): • econometer • eco-revolution-meter • cruise control • bordcomputer (fuel consumption measurement) • gear shift indicator • accelerator limiter

In-car-devices • Revolution counterprohibits the vehicle from being driven at excessive, and therefore very inefficient, engine speeds. • Cruise controlCruise control makes it easy to maintain a steady speed • On-board computerRegarding actual fuel consumption the driver gets immediate feedback on his or her driving behaviour and the influence on fuel consumption. • Econometers and shift indicatorsa fuel consumption meter. A shift indicator shows the driver when it is most fuel-efficient to shift up. • Speed limiters and/or RPM limitersSpeed limiters and/or RPM limiters help avoiding unperceived speeding and excessive engine speeds. All devices mentioned save about 5% fuel. Combined with driving style training the benefits are significantly higher.

  31. 2012 ECO-DRIVING News • Austria was the last of the 27 EU-countries which introduced ECO-DRIVING in the second phase of driving licence procedure to adapt to the harmonised European driving licence directive • Thus every year 3.500.000 new drivers are educated in ECO-DRIVING

  32. 2012 ECO-DRIVING News • 6 years ago, obligatory further training for truck and bus drivers has been introduced by the European Commission including an ECO-DRIVING module • By now no truck driver on European streets without ECO-DRIVING education

  33. 2012 ECO-DRIVING News • Increasing transport CO2 emissions have provoked massive payments of EU-countries in the Kyoto mechanism • ECO-DRIVING has reduced overall CO2 emissions from transport by 2%, thus saving 20.000.000.000 EURO every year. • With an investment of 7 EURO in ECO-DRIVING in 2002 the Dutch Government has saved 50 EURO for the certificate for 1 ton of CO2

  34. 2012 ECO-DRIVING News • 2-liter cars with integrated ECO-DRIVER mode have gained a share of 5% of new cars • New directive prescribes fuel saving cycle for all automatic gear boxes sold in the EU • Intelligent Speed Adaptation and REV-control manage the cars in more than 95% of driving time

  35. 2025 ECO-DRIVING News • Evaluators of historic programs choose ECO-DRIVING as a case study from cradle to grave (1990 - 2015) • The main message: It‘s success made the ECO-DRIVING program unnecessary

  36. 3 points for discussion • (How) Can you make use of E-D in your setting? • Estimate the effects of EU-wide E-D implementation in terms of reduced tons CO2 • How to overcome possible obstacles when implementing E-D?

Inputs for discussion • The European Climate Change Programme (ECCP) in 2001 calculated a reduction potential for driver education and ecodriving of at least 50 Mton CO2 emission reductions by 2010. This would mean savings for consumers of about € 20 Billion per year. • Companies: For Dutch national transportation (80,000 km per year) this would mean average cost savings of about € 800 per year per vehicle. For Dutch international transport the cost savings may count up to € 1,400 per year per vehicle. • Average saving per passenger car and year: 120 € • Amortisation of average E-D training: takes 3 months (comp.) to max. 6 months (cars)
