What is a simile?.  A simile is a comparison of two things using “like” or “as”. Similes are a type of figurative language . Used well, similes are an efficient way of conveying an image or idea to your reader. Used poorly, however, they confuse or distract your reader. Examples of a Simile.

  1. What is a simile? •  A simile is a comparison of two things using “like” or “as”. Similes are a type of figurative language. Used well, similes are an efficient way of conveying an image or idea to your reader. Used poorly, however, they confuse or distract your reader.

  2. Examples of a Simile • Her home was like a prison. • It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog. • Watching the show was like watching paint dry.

  3. Your Assignment… • Complete the simile: "The scramble for territory in Africa among European countries was like...." • Then DRAW your metaphor. • LABEL: Great Britain, "other European countries," and "Africa” in your drawing.
