  1. Automatic Electrical Measurement Chung-Chen Shelby Kuo SearchFuture.comÒ 2005-2006 Professor Thomas N. Jackson Dept. of Electrical Engineering Penn State University

  2. Simple System Diagram Semi-automatic Measurement AUTO DATA controls on HP 4145/55/56, K707/708 AUTO DATA GPIB SMUx HP4145/HP4156

  3. Part 1 - Quick Start • Run it! • Choose Analyzer (EMD) – HP4145 or HP4156 • Toolbar – Simple Graphics • EMD • Source settings • EMD Details • GPIB Configuration • Simple GUI 1 • Simple GUI 2 • Click & Go

  4. Run it! About AUTO DATA and License - Shareware License period

  5. EMD Electrical Measurement Device (EMD) Settings for hp 4145/4156 EMD options Creat/Save/Delete EMD settings Load HP 4145 program Set display names, ranges More options

  6. EMD Details Electrical Measurement Device (EMD) Details Waiting time if auto Extra data from hp4156 Set data file format

  7. GPIB Configuration GPIB Device Settings for HP 4145/4156, Keithley 707A, Cryogenic Probe Choose GPIB device Usually 0 for single GPIB card The most important paramenter Usually none

  8. Simple GUI 1 EMD Interactive Control and Data Plot I Preview Print page Copy plot to print page (max 4 plots) Axis name/Scale Load/Save/ Append data

  9. Simple GUI 2 EMD Interactive Control and Data Plot II Copy plot to clipboard Copy numerical data to clipboard for SigmaPlot or Excel Send EMD setting Trig measurement Transfer data Initiate EMD (must) Increase Var2 # of steps before transfer

  10. Click and Go 0 Basic operating steps 1. Run AutoData program 2. Use "virtual GPIB" if you do not have either NI software installed or GPIB card and device installed. [Menu/Debug][Virtual GPIB] 2.1 Choose Analyzer (EMD) [Menu/Analyzer][hp4145], [hp4156] or [hp 4194] 3. The EMD setup window pop up. 4. If Simple Graph widow does not pop up, click "Simple Graph" on tool bar. 5. "Hide" debug window if you do not like it. 6. Pick up the EMD setup name you want from "EMDevice source/monitor setup" window. Ex: Auto1 (Maximum of 30 different names stored and used) 7. The settings will be renewed. 8. Click "Init EMD" in "EMD Control" in Simple Graph window. 9. The backgroup turned red afterward. 10. Click "Send parameters" in "EMD Ctrol" in Simple Graph window. 11. Check the condition of EMD 12. Click "Single" in "EMD Control" in Simple Graph window. 13. After measurement on EMD, click "Transfer Data" in "EMD Control" in Simple Graph window. 14. Wait for 3 sec on hp4155/6 or 12 sec on hp4145. 15. Check the data in the lists and graph in the plot window. 16. Click "Save Data" in "Measurement Setting" in Simple Graph window. 17. Pick the directory and file name. 18. Both numerical data and plot are saved in text and jpeg formats, respectively.

  11. Data Format • Text data files (.DAT, .TXT) • Column data – maximum 6 columns • EMD settings – recall what was done • FET/Dev characters – for your record • Optional 135 space before each lines of EMD settings/Dev characters – separating numerical data column from text data and easier for import function in software like Sigma Plot • Origin of OriginLab does not import text part • JPEG data files • Imported by most applications - simply JPEG files for quick lab notes • Easy selection on data - many image process software can preview a bunch of files

  12. Load Data • Load saved data files • - not functioning well • Load text data created by HP4156 (Spreadsheet format) • Trying

  13. Part 2 - Automatic Measurement Set options - AutoOpt Auto measure – Auto Step Control Panel Click and Go 1 & 2 Auto measure – Multiple Devices

  14. Automeasurement Total measure= Setup number * Repeat times Settings of Automatic Test on Single EDev (AutoOne) Auto measurement settings (define a SET) How it defines file names # of EMS settings in each set EMD setting names Rest time between two sets Repeat times of all EMD settings assigned

  15. Automeasure – Auto Step Control Panel Interactive Controller of AutoOne Single Edev, multiple sets (in previous AutoOption) Skip waiting EMD (assuming it is done), and start to transfer data Pause/Resume/Cancel AutoOne

  16. Click and Go 1 Toolbar – Simple Graph Set all EMD settings ready, including dev parameters W/L Toolbar – AutoOpt Set options Directory of data files Define data file names Set “setup number” n Select all n EMD Setup names, this is a set of test at time1 Set repeat times T Set “Waiting in between” W, the rest time between each set of test Save these options Total test= n * T Estimated total time ~ (n * ti + W) * T ti : the measurement time of the ith EMD setup Go to Toolbar - AutoMeasure Window

  17. Click and Go 2 Toolbar – Automeasure “Auto Step” control measurements Ignore “Setup name” Usually no need to select anything else if “Auto Option” name is the correct one Click “Start Auto Measure One EDev” Watch and wait “Jump to done” when a real measurement finishes earlier than the estimated time Switch to Outlook Window Show the progress “Refresh” – refresh the picture (the same as the I-V plot) “Jump to done” – the same as above

  18. Click and Go 3 – Data files Data files & names Will start the serial number from 01 (ex: DevA1_I01.dat) Cannot overwrite existing data files (ex: if DevA1_I01.dat exists) If exists, will name it with the serial number from 11, 21, or (n+1)1 Ex: if DevA1_I01.dat exists before the auto-measurement starts, the first file name is DevA1_I11.dat. Then DevA1_I12.dat, … Ex: if DevA1_I11.dat exists before the auto-measurement starts, the first file name is DevA1_I21.dat. Then DevA1_I22.dat, …

  19. Auto – Control Multiple Interactive Controller of AutoMulti – haven’t tested since Jan 2003 Need AutoOption, Wafer, CDie settings ready Multiple Edevs (one EMD set, no repeat) Pause/Resume/Cancel AutoOne Skip waiting EMD (assuming it is done), and start to transfer data
