  1. Packaging Sustainability Metrics:Guidelines on the role of packaging in sustainability Guidlelines for discussion Sonia Raja 2nd Sept 09, Brussels

  2. 2 3 5 4 Agenda 1 Objectives Over-view Success factors Guidelines Next steps

  3. Objective • Prove, through pilot projects, the applicability and value of all the project deliverables and, specifically, the indicators and metrics for packaging in the context of sustainable development, which will provide companies with a common language that can be used internally or jointly with trading partners, to shape discussion and action.

  4. Overview PRE PILOT PILOT POST PILOT • Log pilots • Vetting • Support • Etc. Guidelines on Running a pilot Report Card • RESULTS • Consolidate • Review • Share findings to improve metrics and highlight areas of concern 1 Guidelines on Running a pilot Report Card 2 Guidelines on Running a pilot Report Card 3 Management process

  5. Success factors • Applicability and value • How many metrics relevant? • Allow you to create a baseline? • Can you repeat the process on other products • Can it become a KPI • Allow focus on resources on high impact areas / create roadmaps • Create common language in the value chain • indicators facilitated a standard method of reporting? • create a shared understanding? • Facilitate to shape discussion and action • identify potential enhancement in your sustainability goals? • stimulate the need for a packaging sustainability strategy? • influence alignment? • facilitate dialogue with NGOs/Media/Regulators

  6. Scoping Enablers & Barriers Support Deliverables Guidelines on how to run a pilot

  7. Enablers & Barriers • Enablers • Indicators & Metrics must be finalized (In progress by Metrics Team) prior to Pilots commencing • Senior management commitment from pilot participants • Clear Pilot plan for each individual pilot • Need ‘how to’ methodology from Metrics Team • Willingness of entire value chain to participate & share data • Barriers • Gathering data: in particular the difficulties in getting ‘primary data’ from ‘cradle’ stage of the value chain. • Internal resources & expertise of those resources • Short timelines for Pilot completion (Q1 2010?) • Lack of a agreed standards/methodologies around measurement

  8. Support • Senior management commitment, internal resources, • Brand owner as lead/champion in each Pilot • Outside consultants? • LCA, NGOs, Standards Bodies, Trade Organizations, etc? • Support of enough Pilot participants to cover scope – communications/call to action/pilot invites • Pilot training to all value chain participants (and project teams) • Support Team for Pilot participants (helpdesk, FAQs, etc)

  9. Deliverables • PRE-PILOT DELIVERABLES • Pre-Pilot deliverables: • Value Chain Commitment to Pilot (Agreed timeframes, goals, etc) • Pilot Plan – agreed by all participants • Pilot RACI – holistic value chain emphasisBarriers • POST-PILOT DELIVERABLES • Pilot report card draft suggested (See Excel doc) further work required

  10. Report card Participant questions Project title Participant name Location

  11. Pilot Management Process • RACI for how pilots will be run • Support team – SPC or sub-team? • Training and education • Regular reviews/reporting • Review report card • Consolidate results and share findings

  12. Next Steps • Members to raise awareness in own businesses to drive pilot participation • Finalise: • Guidelines to running a pilot • Report card • Pilot Management process • Timelines • 1st drafts 30 Sept for internal consult – 2 weeks with feedback • Wider consultation by 15 Oct – 2 weeks for feedback • 30 Oct – issue invites • 2 weeks to fine tune • Final documents 15 Nov

  13. Back-up slide

  14. Scoping Enablers & Barriers Support Deliverables Things to consider pre-pilot • Ensure the boundaries of the pilot are clear and tight • Select pilot area [category, country, range of materials] • Consider if this will include packaging and product • Which metrics are applicable/relevant? • What are the company’s corporate targets? • Should metrics cover all 3 pillars or must some have to be core metrics? • What data will be required? • How accessible is this and what is the quality? • Does it allow life for life comparison or will it need to be normalised? • Which independent body will review findings?

  15. Scoping Enablers & Barriers Support Deliverables Things to consider pre-pilot • Indicators and metrics must be finalised • Other players in the supply chain • Confidentiality agreements? • Whats missing? How critical is it and what do need to get this?

  16. Scoping Enablers & Barriers Support Deliverables Things to consider pre-pilot • Senior level engagement is critical • Engagement of relevant stakeholders internal and external • Identify project team and resources required

  17. Scoping Enablers & Barriers Support Deliverables Things to consider pre-pilot • Ensure SMART targets and a clear RACI • Specific and significant • Measurable and meaningful • Achievable and agreed • Realistic and relevant • Time based • Responsible • Accountable • Consult • Inform

  18. During pilot phase • Compare and contrast current practices • What changes would be appropriate and adaptable

  19. Reviewing the pilot • How does the framework affect companies? Compare and contrast. • Does it deliver continuous improvement? • Does it generate the right action for key stakeholders including consumers? • Does this develop into a scorecard? • How does it fit within corporate strategy? • Can it be implemented across industry?

  20. Asia, L. America, Australia, Africa Europe N. America • Limited in scope • Varies by state and company • Part from EU Law • Various local versions • Limited in scope Vision & business case • Global common agreement of context, building on existing work One set of common principles and definitions Principles Company: A B C …… A B C …… A B C …… Indicators and Metrics COMMONLY USED The future - one global framework
